Essential Apps for Shenzhen: Translation, Maps, Transport & Food (English-Friendly)

You don't speak Chinese — no problem. These are the apps that make Shenzhen manageable for English speakers: WeChat for everything, Alipay for payments, Amap or Apple Maps for navigation, Didi for rides, and translation built into WeChat itself.

You don't need to speak Mandarin to get around Shenzhen, but you DO need the right apps. Here's the English-speaker's essential toolkit.

📱 WeChat — your everything app

China's super-app is part messenger, part wallet, part mini-program platform. Register with your passport, link a card for WeChat Pay, and you can pay at almost every shop. WeChat also has built-in translation: long-press any Chinese message or use the scan-translate feature on menus. Many restaurants have WeChat mini-programs for ordering.

💳 Alipay — the other half of mobile payments

Like WeChat Pay but from Alibaba. Many travellers prefer Alipay for its clearer English interface and foreign-card support. Link an international card, and scan-to-pay at stores, restaurants, taxis and metro gates. Alipay also bundles useful travel features (metro codes, Didi mini-program).

🗺️ Maps — Amap (高德) or Apple Maps

Apple Maps works reasonably in Shenzhen with English place names and public transport directions. Amap (Gaode) is the local favourite with the most accurate data but a Chinese interface — usable if you search with Chinese characters. Google Maps is blocked on the mainland and unreliable; don't rely on it.

🚕 Didi — ride-hailing

China's Uber. The Didi app has an English interface (switch in settings), accepts foreign cards, and can pin pickup points automatically. You can also book Didi through the Alipay mini-program. Taxis are available but hailing by hand needs Chinese — Didi is easier.

🚇 Metro & transport

Shenzhen Metro gates accept Alipay/WeChat QR codes (open the transport code in-app) — no ticket machine needed. For the high-speed rail, use Trip.com (English, foreign-card friendly) or the official 12306 app (Chinese).

🍜 Food & delivery

Meituan (美团) and Ele.me deliver food and groceries but have Chinese-only interfaces — easier to ask a Chinese-speaking friend or use hotel concierge. For restaurant discovery, 大众点评 (Dianping) is the local Yelp but Chinese-only; TripAdvisor has limited Shenzhen coverage. Many English speakers simply walk into busy local restaurants and point at pictures — it works!

📚 Translation — the safety net

Google Translate works if you have a VPN; it can translate live camera text (point at a menu). Apple's built-in Translate also works offline for Chinese↔English. WeChat's scan-translate covers most situations.
