Shenzhen Food Guide for First-Timers: What to Eat & How to Order

Shenzhen Food Guide for First-Timers: What to Eat & How to Order

Shenzhen is one of China's great eating cities — Cantonese dim sum, Chaoshan beef hotpot, Hunan spice and street snacks all in one place. Here's what to try first and how to order without stress.

Food is the best reason to visit Shenzhen. Because the city is built by migrants from all over China, you'll find Cantonese dim sum, Chaoshan beef hotpot, Hunan and Sichuan spice, Hakka dishes and seafood — often on the same street. Here's your first-timer's game plan.

🍽️ What to try first

  • Dim sum / yum cha (點心) — morning to mid-afternoon tradition. Look for busy teahouses; push-cart or order-by-menu, either way delicious.
  • Chaoshan beef hotpot (潮汕牛肉火鍋) — paper-thin beef cooked in a clear broth seconds at a time. Order the set; the staff usually guide you.
  • Cantonese roast goose & char siu — sweet, smoky barbecue classics.
  • Seafood — coastal Shenzhen does it well; pick live fish and shellfish from tanks in specialist restaurants.
  • Hunan/Sichuan — fiery stir-fries if you like heat. Ask for "not spicy" (唔辣 / bù là) if you don't.
  • Street snacks — grilled skewers, stinky tofu (trust the process), bubble tea, and sugar water (sweet soups).

📖 How to order with no Chinese

  • Point at menus with pictures — most restaurants have photo menus; pointing works everywhere.
  • QR ordering — many mid-range places have you scan a QR on the table and order on your phone. WeChat/Alipay can auto-translate the menu in the browser — screenshot and translate if needed.
  • WeChat scan-translate on paper menus: long-press the camera icon in WeChat, point at the text, and it translates live.
  • Ask for "no MSG" or "not spicy" if needed — write it in Chinese on your phone: 不要辣 (no spicy), 少油 (less oil).
  • Most places settle the bill by you walking to the counter — the waiter will point.

💡 The busy-restaurant trick

The single best signal in China is crowds: a restaurant full of locals at 1pm is almost always good and fairly priced. Don't judge by decor — the best food is often in humble shops. Check 大众点评 (Dianping) ratings if you can, or just follow the queues.

💰 How much will you spend?

  • Street food & snacks: ¥10-40 per person.
  • Casual local restaurant: ¥40-80 per person.
  • Mid-range dinner: ¥100-200 per person.
  • Fine dining: ¥300+ (Shenzhen has serious high-end restaurants).
