Some of Shenzhen's best eating is done on the street. Night markets and food streets buzz from early evening, and the prices are tiny. Here's where to go and what to look for.
🌃 Best spots for street food
- Dongmen (东门) Pedestrian Street — near Luohu border. Chaotic, lively, endless snack stalls and bargain shopping. Great for a first taste of Shenzhen street food.
- Baqizhen / Shuiwei Village (水围村) in Futian — a foodie village with grills, seafood and late-night spots popular with locals.
- Gangxia & COCO Park area (福田) — more upscale but with food streets and nightlife nearby.
- Shekou Sea World (蛇口海上世界) — waterfront dining, some street-food style stalls and a lively international vibe.
- University areas (e.g. around Shenzhen University) — cheap student-geared snack streets.
Google "Shenzhen night market" or ask your hotel for tonight's best local street — markets rotate and the best ones are often off the tourist map.
🍢 What to order at a street stall
- Chuan'r (串) grilled skewers — lamb, chicken, veggies; you pick from the fridge and they grill it. Say "not spicy" (不辣) if you prefer mild.
- Grilled oysters (烤生蚝) — with garlic, a Shenzhen speciality at seafood street stalls.
- Stinky tofu (臭豆腐) — smells strong, tastes amazing with pickled cabbage; start with a small portion.
- Jianbing (煎饼果子) — savoury crepe with egg and crisp cracker, a great cheap breakfast/lunch.
- Bubble tea (奶茶) — Shenzhen chains are everywhere; try a local favourite like Heytea (喜茶).
- Tangshui (糖水) sweet soups — mango sago, sesame paste, red bean; perfect late-night dessert.
💡 Street food survival tips
- Cash or QR? Most stalls now take Alipay/WeChat QR — some are cash-only, so keep ¥50-100 in small notes.
- Watch for the queue — the stall with the longest line of locals is the one to join.
- Spice levels are real in China — if you're not used to Sichuan peppercorn numbing, start mild.
- Hygiene: busy stalls that cook fresh in front of you are generally safe. Drink bottled water.
- Bring wet wipes — street eating is hands-on.
