November and December are the most comfortable months for Hong Kong readers heading north: mild days, cool evenings, and shopping malls starting their festive promotions. They are also the months where things go wrong — wrong clothes, road closures during APEC, unused Double 11 vouchers, and a late-night rush for the last border crossing. This page is a hub: it groups our most useful November–December guides into six topics — transport, weather, events, deals, tools and health — so you only need this one page to decide what to read next.
1. Border crossings and transport

Main Shenzhen checkpoints and opening hours (always re-check the official Port Office notice before you travel):
| Checkpoint | Opening hours | Shenzhen metro | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lo Wu | 06:30–24:00 | Line 1, Lo Wu | Dongmen, Guomao, MixC |
| Futian | 06:30–22:30 | Lines 4/10, Futian Checkpoint | Convention Centre, COCO Park, Huaqiangbei |
| Huanggang | 24 hours | Line 7, Huanggang | Late-night crossings, Futian |
| Shenzhen Bay | 06:30–24:00 | Line 13, Shenzhen Bay | Nanshan, Houhai, Coastal City, Shekou |
| Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai | 07:00–22:00 | Line 2, Liantang | Eastern Luohu, Longgang, Yantian |
How to choose: Lo Wu for Dongmen and MixC; Futian for the Convention Centre and Huaqiangbei; Shenzhen Bay for Coastal City, MixC World and Shekou. After 11pm, Huanggang is the only 24-hour option. Full walking connections and peak-hour advice: 7 checkpoints compared.
- Faster, no metro crush: high-speed rail to Shenzhen North / Futian (from HK$79).
- Kowloon East, no interchange: 12 cross-border coach pick-up points.
- Out late: Huanggang 24-hour crossing and last services.
- After you arrive: free checkpoint shuttle buses and which ride-hailing app is cheapest (from ¥10).
2. Weather and what to wear
Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau data put the November average at about 21.8°C and the December climate norm at about 17.4°C. There is no central heating, but malls, metro trains and restaurants run their air-conditioning in heating mode, so the indoor–outdoor gap can reach 8–10°C. Layering works best: a thin moisture-wicking base, a light knit or fleece, and a windproof outer layer you can take off indoors.
Two things to watch: November can still see a late typhoon and short heavy rain, so keep a compact umbrella; December is "not always cold, but cold arrives fast" — in late December 2023 temperatures fell 12.8°C within 48 hours. Three scenarios (shopping, dinner, hiking) plus nine places to buy extra layers: the full weather and packing guide.
3. Events and dates to avoid
- 18–19 November: APEC leaders' meetings take place around Xiangmihu. Expect temporary traffic arrangements in Futian; plan extra time. Details: APEC 2026 guide.
- All of November: bougainvillea displays, book fair, coffee festival, markets and autumn foliage — ten seasonal events sorted by checkpoint: 10 things to do in November.
- 11 November: Double 11. Restaurant vouchers and hotel room vouchers are the two categories worth buying; electronics and groceries are not always cheaper than Hong Kong.
- December: mall Christmas installations and gift boxes — 10 places to buy gifts.
4. Deals and shopping
- Double 11 dining vouchers: how to stack Meituan / Dianping coupons — group-buy vouchers usually cannot be combined with in-store promotions.
- Double 11 hotel vouchers: 10 hotels in Luohu, Futian and Nanshan — read the cancellation rules first.
- Taobao/Tmall timetable, consolidation fees and Shenzhen pick-up.
- What is genuinely cheaper: Hong Kong vs Shenzhen supermarket price check; seasonal seafood: buying hairy crab from ¥35.9.
5. Eight essential tools

| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Checkpoint hours | When each of the seven crossings opens |
| Metro ride code | WeChat Pay HK / AlipayHK tap-to-ride |
| 10 essential apps | Payments, maps, food, tickets |
| Ride-hailing comparison | Didi / Amap / Meituan / T3 pricing |
| Currency exchange | Nine money-changer, bank and ATM points |
| A&E and night clinics | Where to go after midnight (from ¥45) |
| Weather and packing | What to wear in November–December |
| Late-night return | How to get back to Hong Kong after midnight |
6. Health and medical check-ups
- Health check-ups: four top-tier hospital and clinic packages compared — book ahead.
- Dental and implants: prices have fallen since centralised procurement, but treatment is usually split across visits.
- Eye tests, glasses and laser surgery.
- Massage price guide: from ¥68 foot massage to ¥398 full body.
Medical outcomes vary by individual; nothing here replaces a doctor's diagnosis. Confirm fees and procedures by phone or WeChat before travelling.
Decide in one minute
- Day trip (under eight hours): Lo Wu → Dongmen for lunch → MixC → back before dinner. Read the checkpoint comparison and the November events list.
- Overnight: Shenzhen Bay → Coastal City and MixC World → hotel voucher → dim sum next morning. Read the hotel voucher guide and the late-night return guide.
- With children: Futian → COCO Park and the Children's Palace area, avoiding the APEC dates. Read the November events list for free parks and mall activities.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a down jacket in November–December?
Usually not. November days reach 24–27°C and December days hover around 20°C; a windproof outer layer plus a light mid-layer covers most days. Only a cold snap — more likely in the second half of December — calls for something heavier.
Can I still visit Shenzhen during APEC?
Yes, but temporary traffic arrangements are expected around Xiangmihu and central Futian on 18–19 November. Avoid peak hours, allow extra travel time, and follow the latest official notice.
Can Double 11 vouchers be used in Hong Kong?
Most Meituan and Dianping vouchers must be redeemed at Shenzhen outlets. Taobao and Tmall depend on whether the seller supports Hong Kong delivery or pick-up.
Which checkpoint is open after midnight?
Huanggang, which operates 24 hours. Other checkpoints close by 24:00, and last transport times vary — see the late-night return guide.
