Shenzhen APEC 2026 Summit Guide: Leaders' Meeting on 18–19 November, Xiangmihu Venue, Border Checkpoint Transport and Travel to Shenzhen Arrangements

The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Shenzhen for the first time on 18–19 November 2026, with the main venue at the Shenzhen International Exchange Center by Xiangmihu Lake in Futian (not the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian CBD); the APEC CEO Summit will run alongside it on 17–18 November. This article covers the dates, the venue's location, the nearest metro station, how to get there from three border checkpoints, and the hotel and transport arrangements visitors to Shenzhen should note for November.

Shenzhen APEC 2026: Shenzhen Hosts for the First Time on November 18–19

The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Shenzhen from November 18 to 19, 2026. This is the third time China has hosted APEC (Shanghai in 2001, Beijing in 2014), and it is also Shenzhen's first time as host. Hong Kong is itself an APEC member economy under the name "Hong Kong, China," so this news is especially relevant to travellers from Hong Kong.

The theme of the meeting is "Building an Asia-Pacific community to prosper together," with the official emphasis on three priority directions: openness, innovation and cooperation. Alongside the leaders' meeting, there will be a whole series of events running at the same time, and Shenzhen will be extremely busy in mid-November — hotels, border checkpoints and city traffic may all be affected. Below is a summary of the meeting dates, the exact venue location, the nearest metro stations, how to get there from three checkpoints, and what to watch out for when heading to Shenzhen.

In one sentence: The meeting runs November 18–19, and the main venue is the Shenzhen International Exchange Center by Xiangmihu in Futian, not the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian CBD; if you are just heading to Shenzhen for a regular trip, it is best to avoid the three days of November 17–19.

Meeting Schedule at a Glance: Leaders' Meeting, CEO Summit, Ministerial Meetings

November 18–1933rd APEC Economic Leaders' MeetingLeaders of 21 member economies attend, around 1,000 delegates expected
Same weekJoint Meeting of Foreign and Trade MinistersOfficially called the joint ministerial meeting

Note that throughout 2026, China will host roughly 300 APEC-related events spread across multiple cities, so November is only the peak, not the only window. The days that will really overwhelm Shenzhen are mainly the ones listed above.

The Venue Is at Xiangmihu, Not the Futian Convention and Exhibition Center

This is the easiest point to get wrong. The main venue for this APEC is the Shenzhen International Exchange Center, located on the north side of Xiangmihu in Futian District, a new campus built specifically for conferences. It is a completely different building from the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian CBD (the one normally used for auto shows, anime conventions and wedding expos). The two are about 15 minutes apart by car and are on different metro lines, so be very careful not to tap in the wrong address.

The campus is not small: it covers about 18 hectares with a total floor area of around 470,000 square metres, including a 5,000-square-metre main auditorium, a 3,800-square-metre banquet hall, around 60 meeting rooms, and a hotel on site. The main structure was completed in May 2026, and Xiangmihu has been refilled with water. It is reported that around 1,000 delegates will be received during the leaders' meeting.

  • Venue: Shenzhen International Exchange Center (north side of Xiangmihu, Futian District)
  • Nearest metro: Xiangmi Station, Xiangmei North Station (Shenzhen Metro Line 2, sharing the same corridor as Line 8)
  • Nearby landmarks: Xiangmi Park, Xiangmihu, Shenye UpperHills (about 10 minutes by car)

How to Get to the Venue from Three Checkpoints

If you really need to get to the Xiangmihu area, here is roughly how to do it after crossing at the three main checkpoints from Hong Kong (mainly by public transport):

  • Luohu Checkpoint: Take Line 1 from Luohu Station → transfer to Line 2 at Grand Theatre Station → get off at Xiangmi Station / Xiangmei North Station. The whole journey takes about 40–50 minutes, and the fare is under ¥5.
  • Futian Checkpoint: Take Line 4 from Lok Ma Chau Station → transfer to Line 1 at Convention and Exhibition Center Station → transfer again to Line 2 at Grand Theatre Station; or simply take a taxi to Xiangmihu, which takes about 15–20 minutes and costs about ¥25–35.
  • Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint: Take Line 13 from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station → transfer to Line 2 at Houhai Station (towards Shekou / Liantang) → get off at Xiangmi Station; the ride is longer, about 50–60 minutes.
  • High-speed rail: Take the high-speed rail from West Kowloon to Futian Station, then transfer to Shenzhen Metro or a taxi after exiting the station. This is one of the fastest combinations, with a journey time of about 15 minutes.

What to Watch Out for in November: Hotels, Crowds, Traffic Controls

Even if you are not going to the meetings, as long as you head to Shenzhen in mid-November, you will feel the impact of the event period. Here are a few practical points to watch:

  • Hotels will be in demand: Delegations, accompanying staff, journalists and business travellers will mostly stay in mid- to high-star hotels in Futian and Nanshan. If you plan to head to Shenzhen and stay overnight from November 16–20, it is best to book two to three weeks in advance, and expect prices to be 20–30% higher than usual.
  • Checkpoint peak patterns will change: During large conferences, passenger flow patterns at checkpoints differ from usual, with a higher proportion of business travellers, and mornings and evenings may be especially crowded. You can choose Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Checkpoint or Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint to spread the load.
  • Road closures / security zones possible: Temporary traffic controls and security perimeters may be set up around the venue. As of the time of writing, the authorities have not yet announced the road closure areas or special immigration arrangements, so be sure to check the Shenzhen Municipal Government and traffic police official channels again one or two days before departure.
  • Malls operate as normal: APEC will not close shopping malls, and everyday trips to Shenzhen for food, shopping and fun continue as usual — it is just that the core area will have more people and more traffic.

Practical Tips

  • For a regular trip to Shenzhen: early November (November 1–14) is the safest bet, avoiding the 17th–19th.
  • If you are attending meetings or reporting: besides booking hotels early, also apply for the relevant documents and register early — do not leave it to the last minute.
  • Rely mainly on the metro: city traffic may be congested during the event period, and the metro is the most reliable option.
  • Watch out for RMB cash and payments: most places on the mainland accept WeChat / Alipay, so set up WeChat Pay HK or AlipayHK before you depart.

FAQ

Where is the APEC 2026 Shenzhen venue? Can I visit it?

The main venue is the Shenzhen International Exchange Center on the north side of Xiangmihu in Futian District. The event period is a highest-level security event, so ordinary members of the public cannot enter to visit; if you want to see the exterior, you can go to the Xiangmihu Park area, but the actual visible range is subject to official announcements.

Will extra lanes be opened or checkpoint hours extended during APEC?

The authorities have not yet announced special arrangements. During past large conferences, checkpoints mainly strengthened crowd management and did not necessarily extend service hours. For the latest announcements, refer to the Hong Kong Immigration Department and the Shenzhen Port Office.

If I go to Shenzhen in November, do I need to deliberately avoid the event period?

Not necessarily. Shenzhen is so large that itineraries in Nanshan, Longhua, Bao'an, Dapeng and other districts are basically unaffected — it is only the Futian core area and some hotels that will be tight. If your itinerary is concentrated in the Futian Xiangmihu and Convention and Exhibition Center area, then it is advisable to reschedule.
