Why does choosing the right checkpoint matter so much?
There are many land checkpoints between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and each one has different opening hours, transport connections, and queueing conditions. Pick the wrong one and you could easily be stuck for an extra hour or two; pick the right one and you can save a lot of time with ease.
General rule of thumb: choose the checkpoint closest to the area you're heading to, and also make sure the opening hours fit your itinerary.

How to pick the right checkpoint for you?
- Rail first: If you live near an MTR station in Hong Kong or Kowloon, Futian/Luohu is the most convenient — one direct MTR ride
- Crossing late at night: In the early morning hours, only Huanggang Checkpoint is open 24 hours, so remember to factor in the Huanggang shuttle bus or taxi transfer
- Heading to Nanshan/Qianhai: Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint is the closest, with B2 bus connections
- Want to avoid the crowds: Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai and Man Kam To are relatively less busy, but check the transport schedules in advance
- Driving / Northbound Hong Kong private cars: Choose a checkpoint that allows private cars (e.g., Shenzhen Bay, Liantang) and apply for the Northbound Travel Scheme in advance
Time-saving tips for crossing the border
- Avoid peak hours: Weekend mornings and holiday afternoons are peak times for northbound/southbound travel — consider crossing during off-peak hours
- Use e-Channel: Eligible Hong Kong residents who have registered for automated clearance (e-Channel) can get through much faster
- Fill in the health declaration in advance: Some checkpoints still require an electronic health declaration (black code) — fill it in beforehand to save time
- Check real-time crowd levels: Before you leave, check live checkpoint crowd information and head to whichever one has fewer people
