Why do so many people go to Shenzhen to buy furniture?
Small Hong Kong homes and expensive furniture are things everyone knows about. In Shenzhen, the same brand and the same type of product generally have lower listed prices than in Hong Kong, mainly for three reasons: fierce competition in the mainland market, lower rent and labour costs, and the fact that mainland online shopping (JD.com, Tmall) lets you place an order and have it delivered directly. For large chain brands, sofas, bed frames and dining tables of the same or similar specifications are listed in Shenzhen at roughly 70% to 90% of Hong Kong prices, and the bigger the furniture, the more obvious the price gap.
But note: not all models are the same in both places. Mainland versions and Hong Kong versions may differ in dimensions, fabric and warranty terms, so you must ask clearly before ordering.
Channel 1: IKEA Shenzhen store
IKEA in Shenzhen is the most familiar choice for Hong Kong people. The product line is close to Hong Kong's but the models differ, so it is best to choose on the mainland official website (ikea.cn) first before going to the store. There is a restaurant inside, with the signature Swedish meatballs and hot dog sets at about ¥20–¥40, so you won't go hungry even after half a day of browsing.

- Transport: within Nanshan District; recommended to take the metro then transfer, or just call a car; about 25 minutes by car from Futian Checkpoint

Channel 2: Red Star Macalline (mid-to-high-end brand collection)
Red Star Macalline is one of the largest mid-to-high-end home furnishing mall brands in the mainland, with several stores in Shenzhen (around Longhua and Bao'an). If you want a full set of design, imported brands, or a professional designer to follow your order, this is more suitable than IKEA. The stores operate in a "brand counter" format, with more room to bargain than supermarket-style stores, and you can usually negotiate free shipping or free installation.
- Transport: most are located in large shopping areas along metro lines; before setting off, search "紅星美凱龍" on Amap and pick the nearest one
- Opening hours: generally 10:00–21:00
- Price reference: genuine leather sofa ¥3,000–¥12,000; solid wood dining table ¥1,500–¥6,000; custom wardrobe about ¥800–¥1,500 per square metre
Channel 3: Linsy Home (physical stores of an online sales brand)
Linsy Home (formerly Linsy Wooden Furniture) is a leader in mainland online furniture sales, with several experience stores in Shenzhen. The biggest advantage is "view prices online, place orders offline", with more transparent pricing than traditional stores and frequent full-reduction promotions. The downside is a longer delivery time, generally 15–30 days.
- Transport: experience stores are mostly located inside large shopping malls; search "林氏家居" on Amap and pick the nearest store
- Opening hours: generally 10:00–22:00

Channel 4: Luohu Sungang building materials shopping area (most convenient)
If you don't want to go all the way to Nanshan, the Sungang area in Luohu is the most convenient choice: just a few stops on Line 7 from Luohu Checkpoint, and the district has a large number of building materials, furniture, curtains and lighting wholesalers, with the lowest prices, but you have to pick the quality yourself and after-sales service is weaker. Departing from three checkpoints, where to buy in each case?
From Luohu Checkpoint (Luohu Station on Line 1), after clearing customs you can take Line 7 directly to the building materials and furniture wholesalers around Sungang and Honghu, with opening hours generally 09:00–19:00 and some shops closed on Sundays; from Futian Checkpoint (Futian Checkpoint Station on Line 4 / Line 10), after clearing customs transfer to Longhua and Bao'an, where Red Star Macalline, Easyhome and large home furnishing malls are concentrated, with opening hours generally 10:00–21:00; from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint (Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station on Line 13), after clearing customs it is about a 15–20 minute drive by car to the IKEA and surrounding home furnishing stores in the Nanshan European City area, with opening hours generally 10:00–22:00. It is recommended to go on a weekday: weekends are crowded and sales staff may not be able to give you enough attention, whereas on a weekday you have time to negotiate prices and arrange delivery at leisure.
How to ship purchases back to Hong Kong?
Large furniture (sofas, beds, wardrobes) cannot be carried across the border yourself, so in practice there are three ways:
- China-Hong Kong freight from the store: most stores have partner China-Hong Kong freight services that can deliver to your Hong Kong home; the cost depends on volume, generally from about ¥800–¥2,500 per vehicle, plus a Hong Kong upstairs delivery fee.
- Consolidation / shared vehicle: small furniture can be consolidated and shipped through a consolidation warehouse, at about ¥3–¥8 per kilogram, but you must pack it well yourself.
- Carrying across the border for personal use: small items (for example a folding chair or a bedside cabinet) can be brought across yourself, and as personal-use items there is generally no problem; large quantities or brand-new goods for commercial use may require customs declaration.

4 tips to avoid pitfalls
- Measure dimensions first: Hong Kong flats are mostly smaller than mainland ones, so measure the doorway, lift and corridor clearly before ordering; mainland sofas are often 2.6 metres or more, and there are many cases of them not fitting into the home.
- Ask clearly about warranty: mainland warranties are mostly limited to on-site service within the city and usually do not cover items after they are shipped to Hong Kong, so be mentally prepared.
- Look at the real thing, not just pictures: online sales brands have relatively large colour differences, so it is best to go to an experience store, sit on it and feel it before ordering.
- Pay through proper channels: when paying with Alipay / WeChat, remember to keep the electronic receipt for future consumer rights protection.

How much cheaper is buying furniture in Shenzhen than in Hong Kong?
