Shenzhen sits in the southern subtropics, so autumn here is not the neat, uniform harvest season of the north — instead the summer and autumn fruits overlap. That means "when to go" matters more than "where to go". Get the timing wrong and you really will waste the trip: some people take their kids strawberry picking in September and arrive to find only green seedlings, because strawberries do not come in until December.

Guangming Happy Farmland (光明歡樂田園) (Guangming District)

An agriculture-themed park in the north of Guangming Town, Guangming District. Entry is free on ordinary days (ticketed events such as the rapeseed flower festival and rice-field art festival may charge separately). Inside there is a farm train, flower fields and a picking area of nearly 100,000 square metres, with varieties rotated by season.

• Transport: alight at Guangming Dajie Station on Metro Line 6, then about 10 minutes by taxi; car park around ¥10 per day
• Tip: the park is open-air — check the forecast the night before and reschedule if there is a thunderstorm or typhoon warning

Guangming Farm Grand View Garden (光明農場大觀園) (Guangming District)

A long-established agricultural sightseeing base with an ecological orchard, a dairy cow enclosure and farming experiences. The address is No. 88 Bishui Road, Guangming Subdistrict, Guangming District — good for taking kids to see animals and pick fruit.

• Transport: Exit B of Guangming Dajie Station on Metro Line 6, then transfer to bus M411 or M490 and alight at the "Guangming Farm Grand View Garden" stop

Pingshan Jiulong Ecological Park (坪山九龍生態園) (Pingshan District)

An all-round farm: one ticket covers half a day, with picking, animal feeding and non-powered play equipment. Tickets around ¥36–80, roughly ¥60–100 per person for a family outing.

• Transport: alight at Pingshanwei Station on Metro Line 14, then about 15 minutes by taxi
• Best for: ages 3–14, half a day to a full day

Bao'an Aloha Piggy Family Farm (寶安阿菠蘿小豬親子農場) (Bao'an District)

Located on the southern slopes of Fenghuang Mountain in Bao'an, covering more than 200 mu, this farm focuses on farming education, with a set programme and instructors leading groups. Day camps are around ¥150–300 per person, suitable for children aged 5–14 who can already follow instructions.

• Transport: alight at Fuyong Station or Airport North Station on Metro Line 11, then about 15 minutes by taxi
• Reminder: ask for the programme schedule before booking and check the ratio of "teaching" to "free play" time

Rainy-day backup: Guangming Blue Whale World Shopping Centre (光明藍鯨世界購物中心) (Guangming District)

If a thunderstorm hits, you can switch to Guangming Blue Whale World Shopping Centre on Guangming Avenue in Guangming District. It is about 140 metres on foot from Exit A of Fenghuangcheng Station on Metro Line 6. The mall has a supermarket, restaurants and indoor play facilities, so it is easy to wait out the rain before heading into the park.

Take two adults and one child going to an all-round farm: tickets around ¥36–80 per person, with children possibly half price by height; fruit eaten on site while picking is usually not charged extra, while dragon fruit taken home is weighed at around ¥15–30 per jin. Roughly: tickets ¥150 + fruit to take home ¥80 + lunch ¥150, so a half-day out for the family costs about ¥380 — cheaper than admission to a theme park. If you choose a free agricultural park, entry is ¥0, and you can keep transport and food to under ¥150.

5. How do you get there from the three border crossings?

• Futian Port: head north on Line 4, transfer at Hongshan Station to Line 6 for Guangming Dajie Station; about 1 hour in total, the most direct route to Guangming.
• Luohu Port: Line 1 to Convention & Exhibition Center, then transfer to Line 4 and again to Line 6 towards Guangming; if you want fewer changes, consider a shared taxi.
• Shenzhen Bay Port: Line 13 into the city, then transfer to Line 6 (change at Hongshan Station) for Guangming, or just call a car — journey time depends on traffic.
