Where to See Autumn Leaves in Shenzhen: Bald Cypress at Its Best from November to January
Shenzhen doesn't get the Japanese or Korean-style maple leaves, but every year around the start of winter, the bald cypress (also known as swamp cypress) in several city parks gradually shifts from fresh green to golden yellow, orange-red and caramel tones — a rare burst of autumn colour in this ever-green city. The best time is generally late November to January, with December to January being when the trees turn fully caramel-red and orange-red. All 7 parks below are free or extremely cheap, and all are along metro lines, so you can reach them from the Luohu, Futian or Shenzhen Bay checkpoints.
① Xianhu Botanical Garden | The densest lakeside bald cypress (Luohu)
Address: 160 Xianhu Road, Liantang, Luohu District, Shenzhen. Xianhu Botanical Garden is a 4A-rated scenic area. In autumn and winter, rows of bald cypress along the lake change colour, with the "Aquatic Garden" and "Jade Belt Bridge" areas the most concentrated — you can even capture their reflections in the lake. Opening hours are roughly 06:00 to 21:30, and entry requires a real-name online reservation.
Getting there: Metro Line 2 to Xianhu Road Station, Exit C3, about an 8-minute walk; or take bus M182 or M526 and get off at Xianhu Botanical Garden terminus. The best time for photos is 3pm to 5pm, when sunlight filters through the leaves onto the lake.
② Lianhuashan Park | Wooden boardwalks among the bald cypress (Futian)
Address: 6030 Hongli Road, Futian District, Shenzhen. Lianhuashan Park sits in the heart of Futian. From late December to early January it takes on orange-yellow hues, and walking the natural wood boardwalks weaving between the bald cypress offers a different angle on the scenery. The park is open 24 hours and free.
Getting there: Metro Line 3 or Line 4 to Children's Palace Station, or Line 4 to Lianhuabei Station, or Line 2 to Lianhuaxi Station, then walk; you can also enter the park via the footbridge from UpperHills.
③ Honghu Park | Bald cypress on land and in water + painterly landscaping (Luohu)
Address: 2023 Wenjin North Road, Luohu District, Shenzhen. Besides bald cypress on land, Honghu Park also has bald cypress growing in the water; combined with the park's landscaping it looks like an oil painting, and the "East Shore Lakeside" area is the best spot to photograph them. It's less crowded than the popular city-centre parks, open 24 hours and free.
Getting there: Metro Line 7 to Honghu Station, Exit A — you're there as soon as you exit.
④ Sihai Park | The crescent-moon corridor photo spot (Nanshan)
Address: 82 Gongyuan Road, Zhaoshang Subdistrict, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The bald cypress at Sihai Park turns red at different times, so the colour layers are especially rich; by the lake there are small bridges and a Chinese-style garden, with the "Crescent Moon Corridor" as the photo spot. There's also a large lawn where you can picnic and fly kites. Opening hours are roughly 06:30 to 22:30, free.
Getting there: Metro Line 2 to Wanxia Station, Exit C, then walk.
⑤ Jiuwei Wetland Park | Over-water bald cypress boardwalk + birdwatching (Bao'an)
Address: Intersection of Caihui Road and Zhoushi Road, Hangcheng Subdistrict, Bao'an District, Shenzhen (search "Jiuwei Wetland Park North Gate" for navigation). This is a free hidden gem newly discovered by visitors in autumn/winter 2026, with a 1–2 km wooden boardwalk hugging the water through the bald cypress; in late autumn the leaves shift from fresh green to golden yellow, then orange-yellow, then red-brown — described as "caramel red". The park also has a quirky "Jiong-shaped birdwatching hut" where you can quietly watch egrets and wild ducks, and the lakeside sunset is the grand finale. Free, no reservation needed, opening hours roughly 05:30 to 20:00 (clearing starts around 18:30).
Getting there: Metro Line 12 to Zhongwunan Station, Exit E1, then transfer to a bus or call a car for about 10 minutes (walking not recommended); or take bus M335/M511 and get off at "Zhoushi Caihui Road Intersection" and walk about 400 metres. Note the park is a water-source protection area: no tents, no pets, no entering the water and no drones. There are no shops inside, so bring your own water and snacks.
⑥ Central Park | Streams and lawns with bald cypress (Futian)
Address: Central District, Futian District, Shenzhen. The bald cypress in Central Park is scattered among lawns and streams; in autumn you can lay down a blanket and picnic while enjoying the view — very chill. Free, open all day.
Getting there: Metro Line 3 to Huaxin Station, Exit A1, then walk.
⑦ Lizhi Park | The most peaceful lake reflections (Luohu/Futian border)
Address: Hongling Middle Road, Futian District, Shenzhen. The lake at Lizhi Park stretches out the reflections of the bald cypress; with few people around in the early morning, you can have the reflections to yourself — one of the most peaceful cypress-viewing spots in the city. Free, open all day.
Getting there: Metro Line 3 or Line 9 to Hongling Station, then about a 5-minute walk.

Practical Photography Tips
- Best times: 8–10am or 3–5pm, when the slanted light makes the leaves look most translucent.
- The bald cypress turns colour at different times in each park, so a day or two before you go, check Xiaohongshu or the park's official WeChat account for real-time photos — otherwise you may arrive too early while the trees are still green.
- Jiuwei Wetland Park has lots of mosquitoes — remember to bring insect repellent and wear long trousers and non-slip shoes.
- To avoid the crowds, go on a weekday; Xianhu and Honghu get quite busy at weekends.

Jiuwei Wetland Park is a water-source protection area, so pets are not allowed; pet rules vary at other parks, so it's best to check before you go.

⑧ Honghu Park | Lotuses + bald cypress, two seasons in one (Luohu)
Honghu Park is in Luohu District. Planning began in 1984 and part of it opened in April 1985; it covers about 59.15 hectares and is an urban comprehensive park known for its lotus and bald cypress scenery, with water as its main feature (source: official website of the Shenzhen Municipal Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau). In summer you come for the lotuses, in winter for the bald cypress — two highlights a year; the lake reflections are the most famous composition here, best shot in the early morning when it's empty. Get off at Honghu Station on Metro Line 7 and walk a few minutes to the park; from Luohu Checkpoint, take Line 1 and transfer to Line 7, about 25 minutes.
⑨ Bijiashan Park + Honghualing Park | Lesser-known, quieter bald cypress spots
- Bijiashan Park (26 Meigang Road, Futian District): 146 hectares, main peak 178 metres above sea level, with over 40 hectares of green space and over 90% vegetation coverage, free entry; the bald cypress is concentrated around the artificial lake, paired with a lovers' bridge and waterside paths — a better composition than most city-centre parks. Take Metro Line 4 to Lianhuabei Station or Shangmeilin Station and walk; from Futian Checkpoint, Line 4 goes direct to Lianhuabei Station in about 20 minutes.
- Honghualing Park (Longcheng Subdistrict, Longgang District, southeast side of Qinglinjing Reservoir): there's a bald cypress grove in the park — enter via the small path to the left of the main gate and walk about 200 metres; in autumn and winter when the colours turn, the whole grove reflects in the lake. The park also has a free car park and large lawns. Getting there: Metro Line 16 to Shangjing Station, then bus M306 to Tianli Industrial Park and walk; it's a longer journey, so best combined into a day trip.
A reminder: all nine parks above are free to enter, and the bald cypress turns colour at different times each year, so checking Xiaohongshu or the park's official WeChat account a day or two before you go is the most reliable way to see real-time photos. How to get there from the three checkpoints: from Luohu Checkpoint take Line 7 to Honghu Station, from Futian Checkpoint take Line 4 to Lianhuabei Station, and from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint take Line 13 and transfer to Line 2 to Wanxia Station — corresponding to Honghu, Bijiashan and Nanshan's Sihai Park respectively.
