Shenzhen Guangming Day Trip 2026: Shenzhen Art Museum + Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum (Tickets, Metro Line 6, Exhibitions)

Shenzhen's Guangming Science City has taken shape: the Shenzhen International Art Museum opens on 30 May 2026, with seven exhibitions and the Old Summer Palace zodiac heads assembled together for the first time, and a full-exhibition adult pass priced at ¥120. Next door is the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, with tickets from ¥50 and around 950 exhibits. This guide sets out both museums' addresses, the Line 6 metro exits, ticket prices and a half-day itinerary.

Many people visiting Shenzhen only know Luohu, Futian and Nanshan, but Shenzhen's newest cultural landmark in 2026 is actually in Guangming District — Guangming Science City is now home to two major new venues, the Shenzhen International Museum of Art and the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, forming a "science + art" landmark cluster. If you want a different kind of day out and to escape the crowds in the city centre, a Guangming day trip is a great choice.

1. Shenzhen International Museum of Art: South China's Newest Art Landmark

The Shenzhen International Museum of Art officially opened to the public on 30 May 2026. Located in Guangming Science City, it is one of the newest cultural landmarks in the Greater Bay Area. The venue has 15 international-standard exhibition halls and launched seven major exhibitions on opening, spanning ancient and modern, Chinese and international — from the Old Summer Palace zodiac heads and the European master originals in "Masters' Realm" to Xu Bing's "Word Paradise" and the first Art and Technology Biennale, "Flickering 1/∞". The "Moon Gate" light installation in the atrium is the signature photo spot.

3. How to Get to Guangming: Cross-Border Transport

Guangming District is in northwestern Shenzhen, quite far from the city centre, but Metro Line 6 now goes there directly:

  • From Futian Checkpoint: take Line 4 from Lok Ma Chau Station, change to Line 6 to Guangming Station, about 60 minutes.
  • From Luohu Checkpoint: take Line 1 from Luohu Station to Grand Theatre Station, change to Line 2 and then Line 6, or simply take a taxi, about 70–80 minutes.
  • From Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint: take Line 13 from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station and change to Line 6; the journey is longer.
  • High-speed rail: you can take the high-speed rail to Guangmingcheng Station, then transfer to a taxi or metro connection.

Simply put: for a Guangming day trip, allow a full day and don't cram it together with a city-centre itinerary.

If you drive, both venues have car parks (the art museum's underground garage has limited spaces; if it is full you can park at the science museum next door), but parking in Shenzhen is tight at weekends, so taking the metro is recommended. If you take the high-speed rail, get off at Guangmingcheng Station and take a taxi to Science City, about 15–20 minutes.

4. Suggested Half-Day / Full-Day Route

  • 10:00 Arrive at the Shenzhen International Museum of Art and see the highlights first ("Return of National Treasures" Old Summer Palace zodiac heads, "Masters' Realm" European master originals).
  • 13:00 Have lunch at the venue restaurant or somewhere in Science City.
  • 14:30 Walk over to the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum and try the interactive science exhibits (allow 2–3 hours).
  • 17:30 Stop by Science Park or Hongqiao Park for photos, or head back to the city centre for dinner.

5. Practical Tips

  • Both museums are closed on Mondays, so bear that in mind when planning.
  • Special exhibitions at the art museum run for limited periods; check the official WeChat account before you go to see which exhibitions are still open.
  • The venues are air-conditioned and cool, so bring a light jacket.
  • Seeing both museums takes at least 4–5 hours, so wear comfortable trainers.
  • Tickets, opening hours and exhibition dates are subject to the two museums' latest official announcements.

6. Nearby: What Else Is There to Do in Guangming?

If you still have time after both museums, there are a few spots in Guangming District worth a stop:

Guangming Farm Grand View Garden

A long-established farm-themed park in Guangming with agricultural sightseeing, amusement rides and rural scenery — great for letting kids burn off energy; it is a short drive from the Guangming Station area.

Guangming Town Happy Farmland

A leisure park known for its rural scenery and flower fields, with flower meadows and farm activities in autumn and winter — a lovely spot for photos and family strolls.

Hongqiao Park

A popular park in Guangming, known for its red "Rainbow Bridge" walkway. Walking up gives you views over Guangming Science City — most beautiful at dusk.

What Else to Eat?

When it comes to Guangming, you must mention Guangming roast pigeon — this is Guangming District's signature dish, served at many long-established restaurants. After the art museum, stop for a pigeon before heading back to the city centre. There are also farmhouse dishes and rural restaurants around Guangming Farm.

FAQ

How do I get to the Shenzhen International Museum of Art?

Metro Line 6, Guangming Station Exit D, then walk about 800 metres along Guanghui Avenue; you can also take the free shuttle bus from Exit C to the museum's main entrance.

How much are art museum tickets?

All-exhibitions pass full price ¥120, basic ticket ¥20, special exhibition ticket about ¥40–60. Buy with your real name on the official WeChat account; there is usually no on-site ticket sales.

Can I see both museums in one day?

Yes, but it will be rushed. Allow a full day: art museum in the morning, science and technology museum in the afternoon, and don't squeeze it into the same day as a city-centre itinerary.

When are the two museums closed?

Both are closed on Mondays (except public holidays). The art museum is open 10:00–18:00; the science and technology museum is open 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 09:30–18:00 at weekends and on holidays.

7. Practical Information for Both Museums (Official Announcements)

Shenzhen International Museum of Art: officially opened on 30 May 2026, with seven major exhibitions unveiled at the same time (including the Old Summer Palace zodiac heads). The address is Shishan 3rd Street, Xinhu Subdistrict, Guangming District (northeast side of the junction of Guanghui Avenue and Shishan 3rd Street), i.e. the central area of Guangming Science City, south of Science Park and next to the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays (except public holidays). Entry requires real-name booking and ticket purchase; ticket types include free tickets, concession tickets, parent-child tickets and special exhibition tickets. Children under 1.2 metres must be accompanied by a guardian; food, drinks and selfie sticks are not allowed inside, and flash photography is not permitted in the zodiac heads exhibition area.

Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum: address 8 Guanghui Avenue, Guangming District, directly accessible from Metro Line 6 Guangming Station Exit D. Opening hours are 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 09:30–18:00 at weekends and on holidays, closed Mondays. Permanent exhibition halls: adult ticket about ¥50, concession ticket about ¥32; free for children under 6 and adults over 65 (booking still required); 4D/cinema and dome theatres from about ¥30. Booking is by real name via the official mini-programme; tickets for the third day ahead are released at 20:00 each evening, and weekend tickets are in high demand.

Transport: get off at Guangming Station on Metro Line 6; from Exit C there is a free shuttle bus to the Shenzhen International Museum of Art (09:00–18:00, about every 30 minutes, increased to every 15 minutes from 10:00–12:00 and 14:00–16:00); you can also take buses M549 or M532 to the "深圳國際美術館" stop. If driving, you can park in the underground car park of the art museum or the science museum; spaces are tight on holidays.

A reminder: the two museums are next to each other — cross the road after one and you're at the other. But the art museum takes about 4–5 hours to get through, and 80% of the science museum's 950-plus exhibits are hands-on, so a serious visit means one day is only enough for one and a half museums. If you want to see both, arrive at 09:30 in the morning. The quietest times are weekday mornings 09:30–11:00, or the last 2 hours before closing at weekends.

In summary: Guangming Science City is Shenzhen's most worthwhile new cultural district to visit in 2026. The Shenzhen International Museum of Art and the Science and Technology Museum offer art and science respectively, and both are great whether you're bringing children or recharging your own batteries. Allow plenty of time for transport, and check official announcements for tickets and exhibition dates.
