Hong Kong to Shenzhen by High-Speed Rail 2026: Shenzhen North & Futian Stations, Fares, Changes, Refunds and Metro Connections

Hong Kong to Shenzhen by high-speed rail in 2026: how Futian and Shenzhen North stations differ (14/18 minutes), official fares by class from HK$79, registering on 12306 with a Home Return Permit, the official change and refund fee rules with effective dates, plus metro connections, exits and useful stops across Luohu, Futian and Nanshan.

For Hong Kong residents heading to Shenzhen in 2026, the high-speed rail is the most reliable and fastest land option. West Kowloon Station runs co-location clearance, so there is no queueing at a road checkpoint, and the fastest trains reach Futian in about 14 minutes and Shenzhen North in about 18. The catch: the railway drops you at one of two Shenzhen stations — Futian or Shenzhen North — and picking the wrong one can cost you 30 to 40 extra minutes of transfers. This guide covers how the two stations differ, official 2026 fares by class (second, first, premium and business), registering on 12306 with a Home Return Permit, the official change and refund rules with effective dates, and the metro connections plus useful stops in three districts once you get off the train.

All fares, timings and rules were checked against official sources on 12 October 2026 (MTR High Speed Rail, China Railway 12306, the Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission, the Shenzhen Transport Bureau and Shenzhen Railway). Fares and timetables change with quarterly timetable revisions and exchange rates, so re-check the official channels before you travel.

1. Futian or Shenzhen North: which station should you use?

A high-speed train on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link

Both are short-haul stops on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link: you board at West Kowloon, clear both immigration checks inside the station, and arrive without changing trains. The only real question is which side of the city you want to enter.

Futian: straight into the Futian CBD

Futian Station sits between Yitian Road and Shennan Boulevard in Futian District, right beside the Civic Center, and was the first Chinese railway station buried entirely under the city centre. Inside, a moving walkway links the station to Futian metro station (Lines 2, 3 and 11). Shopping Park station (Lines 1 and 3) is about a 50-metre walk away via Exit A, and Civic Center station (Lines 2 and 4) is around 780 metres away. If you are heading for the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, COCO Park, Link CentralWalk or Huaqiangbei, get off at Futian.

Do not mix them up: Futian railway station is not Futian Checkpoint. The checkpoint is a road border crossing served by Futian Checkpoint metro station on Lines 4 and 10; the rail station connects to Futian metro station on Lines 2, 3 and 11. They are some distance apart.

Shenzhen North: Longhua, Minzhi and the intercity hub

Shenzhen North is at 28 Zhiyuan Middle Road, Minzhi Street, Longhua District, and is the city's largest rail hub. After the national timetable revision of 1 July 2026, Shenzhen North runs up to 848 train services on the full schedule and Futian 216, with 13 extra cross-border stops added between West Kowloon and Futian. The station shares its building with metro Lines 4, 5 and 6: Exit C leads straight to the high-speed rail concourse on level F1, Exit B serves the West Square and Exit D the East Square. Use it for Guangzhou, Dongguan, Xiamen or Shanghai, or to reach Longhua and Nanshan.

2. 2026 fares: second, first, premium and business class

There are four classes. Second class uses a 3+2 seat layout and is the most common; first class is 2+2 with wider seats; premium and business are the higher cabins and only exist on some Mainland-operated trains. Note that MTR's Vibrant Express offers only first and second class, so you need a Mainland train if you want a business seat.

  • These are the official MTR High Speed Rail fares, effective 11 October 2026; child fares apply to ages 6 to 13.
  • Tickets are priced in renminbi. Hong Kong dollar fares are adjusted monthly against the exchange rate and published on the first day of each month; the fare that applies is the one in force in the month you buy, which may differ from the fare on your travel date.
  • Fares from West Kowloon to the same destination can vary by train and by long- or short-haul routing. The amount shown by the ticketing system at purchase is final.
  • To keep the cost down, travel outside peak periods and buy second class early; on holidays and weekends, book at least a week ahead for popular departures.

3. Buying tickets: registering on 12306 with a Home Return Permit

Buy through China Railway's official 12306 platform — the website (12306.cn) or the Railway 12306 app — which handles purchase, changes and refunds in one place and sells tickets for departures within 15 days.

  • Document: Hong Kong residents select the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Home Return Permit). Enter your name in simplified Chinese.
  • Verification: you can verify with a Hong Kong mobile number or an email address. Email verification must be completed within 24 hours; SMS verification within 15 minutes.
  • Finding the station: type "香", "hkw" or "xg" to pull up Hong Kong West Kowloon, or use the "X" letter index.
  • Service hours: ticketing and changes run from 05:00 to 01:00 the next day (Tuesdays 05:00 to 24:00); refunds are available 24 hours.
  • E-tickets: high-speed rail is fully electronic and name-based. Scan the document you booked with (your Home Return Permit) at the gate — there is no need to collect a paper ticket. If you need a reimbursement receipt, print one at a station machine or ticket window within 180 days of travel.
  • Tip: once you complete face-and-document verification in the app you can buy waitlist tickets, use the app's dynamic QR boarding code, and manage tickets bought on your behalf by others.
  • Per order you can buy up to 5 one-way tickets or 5 return sets; passengers on one order may be seated in different carriages.

4. Changing and refunding: the official rules in one place

This is the most practical part of the guide. The rules below are China Railway 12306's current official policy: stepped refund fees, revised change rules effective 15 January 2024, and the limited-time free refund for mistaken purchases introduced on 19 January 2026. Refund fees on cross-border tickets follow the cross-border transport agreements.

  • 12306 allows a maximum of 3 refunds per day; order cancellations are also capped at 3 per day, after which online purchase, change and refund are blocked for that day.
  • At Hong Kong West Kowloon, changes to e-payment tickets are limited to no-difference changes. Refunds always go back to the original payment channel.

5. After you arrive: connections from both stations plus three districts

Shenzhen Metro uses distance-based fares: RMB2 for the first 4 km, then RMB1 per 4 km up to 12 km, per 6 km up to 24 km, and per 8 km beyond that (official fare table); a Shenzhen Tong card gives 5% off. The eight real places below cover location, metro line, station and exit, and price, so you can head straight out.

1. Shenzhen North Station (Longhua)

Reach it from Futian on Line 3, or from Shenzhen North on Line 4 with a change to Line 3.

4. Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center and COCO Park (Futian)

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to collect a ticket before boarding?

No. High-speed rail is fully electronic and name-based: scan the document you booked with (your Home Return Permit) at the entry and exit gates. If your employer needs a receipt, print a reimbursement receipt at a station machine or ticket window within 180 days of travel — each ticket can only be printed once.

Which is faster, Futian or Shenzhen North?

Futian is about 14 minutes and Shenzhen North about 18 minutes, with very frequent departures. The difference is not the ride but where you are going afterwards: Futian for the Futian CBD; Shenzhen North for Longhua, Nanshan or onward trains.

Are Futian Station and Futian Checkpoint the same place?

No. Futian Checkpoint is the road border crossing served by Futian Checkpoint metro station on Lines 4 and 10. Futian railway station connects to Futian metro station on Lines 2, 3 and 11. They are a fair distance apart, so arriving at Futian station does not put you at the checkpoint.

What if I buy the wrong ticket?

If you bought through 12306, you can cancel online free of charge within 30 minutes of payment and at least 4 hours before departure — limited to one order per purchaser per day, and not available for changed or waitlist tickets. After that window, the stepped refund fees apply: 5% more than 48 hours before departure, 10% between 24 and 48 hours, and 20% within 24 hours.

Can I still get a refund if I miss my train?

Before 24:00 on the same day you can change free of charge to another train that day. Changing to the next day or later costs 40% of the lower of the two fares. Remember that a ticket changed after departure cannot be refunded.
