Think Shenzhen is all about shopping malls? Actually, Shenzhen has plenty of beautiful mountains, and most of them are free to enter and accessible directly by metro or bus. For Hong Kongers who enjoy hiking, heading north for a hike is another budget-friendly outdoor option. Here are 5 recommended routes, ranging from beginner to challenge level:
⛰️ Wutong Mountain — Shenzhen's Highest Peak・Panoramic City Views
Wutong Mountain stands at about 943 meters above sea level, making it Shenzhen's highest peak, offering a "commanding view of all lesser mountains" experience: on clear days, you can see the Shenzhen city center, reservoirs, and Hong Kong's New Territories. The ascent takes about 2-3 hours, with paved paths and stairs the whole way — moderately challenging but well worth it.
- Transport: Shenzhen Metro Line 8, Wutong Mountain South Station / Haishan Station, or direct bus
- Difficulty: Medium-high (about 3-4 hours round trip)
- Highlights: Panoramic Shenzhen views, sunrise and sea of clouds (requires an early morning start)
🌳 Tanglang Mountain — Easy City Hike・Spot Wild Monkeys
Tanglang Mountain is located in Nanshan District, at about 430 meters above sea level. The entire trail is paved, making it great for beginners and families. Along the way, you may spot wild macaques (remember not to feed them), and from the summit, you can see the whole Nanshan District and Shenzhen Bay.
- Transport: Metro Line 5 Tanglang Station / Line 7 Shenyun Station
- Difficulty: Low (about 1.5-2 hours round trip)
- Highlights: Easy walk, monkey spotting, panoramic Nanshan views
🦅 Fenghuang Mountain — Bao'an's Backyard・Pilgrimage Site
Fenghuang Mountain is located in Fuyong, Bao'an District, at about 376 meters above sea level. Midway up the mountain sits the ancient Fenghuang Temple, where many locals come to pray. The trail is well shaded along the way, so it doesn't get too hot even in summer. After descending, you can also explore Fenghuang Ancient Village.
- Transport: Metro Line 11 Tangwei Station, then transfer to a bus, or take a taxi directly
- Difficulty: Low to medium (about 2 hours round trip)
- Highlights: Ancient temple prayers, plenty of shade
🌄 Yangtai Mountain — Sunset Hikes・Forest Bathing
Yangtai Mountain sits on the border of Longhua and Bao'an, at about 587 meters above sea level, and is known as "Shenzhen's Green Lung." There are multiple trail options, including paved paths and dirt trails, making it ideal for Hong Kongers who want to escape the concrete jungle and breathe in some fresh air. Heading up around dusk offers great sunset views.
- Transport: Metro Line 6 Yangtai Mountain East Station, or bus
- Difficulty: Medium (about 2-3 hours round trip)
- Highlights: Forest bathing, sunset scenery
🏞️ Maluan Mountain — Waterfall Clusters・Hidden Summer Retreat
Maluan Mountain is located in the Pingshan area of Longgang, and is most famous for its waterfall clusters: during the summer rainy season, the water flows dramatically, giving it a mini "High Island Reservoir" vibe. The trail follows the stream, and while it's not particularly difficult, it's quite far from the city, so it's best to drive or arrange a car.
- Transport: Recommended to drive / take a taxi (about 1 hour from the city center)
- Difficulty: Medium (about 2-3 hours)
- Highlights: Waterfall cooling, few crowds and peaceful
Hiking Tips
- Most Shenzhen parks are free to enter, but some require advance booking (via WeChat official accounts or mini-programs) — check before you go
- Summer weather is hot, so it's best to set off early morning or at dusk, and bring plenty of water and sunscreen
- On bigger mountains like Wutong Mountain, stone steps can get slippery after rain — be careful
- Mobile reception can be patchy in some mountain areas, so it's advisable to download offline maps in advance (use the offline feature on AMap)
- Want a good meal after your hike? Use Dianping to find nearby restaurants to refuel
