The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max went on sale on 18 September 2026, and Shenzhen's three Apple Stores drew the usual launch-day queues. This year, though, queueing no longer gets you a phone: every Shenzhen store required an online reservation, stock was locked up before opening, and the Pro Max is still weeks away for most buyers. This guide skips the price table (that comparison lives in our sister article) and covers what actually matters on the ground: launch-day queues, stock, the departure tax refund for Hong Kong shoppers, and the official differences between a mainland China iPhone and a Hong Kong one.
Shenzhen iPhone 18 launch: the 30-second summary
- Dates: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max pre-orders opened 12 September, on sale 18 September (Friday). The foldable iPhone Duo opens for pre-order at 8pm on 16 October and goes on sale 23 October, from HK$17,499 (Apple Hong Kong site, checked 12 October 2026).
- Queues: stores opened at 8am on 18 September in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Guangzhou. At the Yitian Holiday Plaza store in Nanshan, staff were still managing a long, fenced queue at midday on 20 September, checking reservations one by one.
- Stock: the regular Pro is fairly available and has been discounted to CNY 9,099 on some platforms, CNY 900 below Apple's price. The Pro Max is sold out almost everywhere, with website orders quoted for delivery around 20 October.
- Tax refund: Hong Kong residents count as overseas visitors. Spend at least CNY 200 in the same refund store on the same day and you can claim a refund of 11% (goods taxed at 13%) or 8% (goods taxed at 9%), provided you leave the mainland within 90 days.
- Warranty: the mainland model (A3715 / A3718) and the Hong Kong model (A3714 / A3717) are almost identical hardware, but Apple's one-year limited warranty and AppleCare+ both apply only in the country or region of original purchase.

What launch week actually looked like at Shenzhen's Apple Stores
Apple opened sales at 8am on 18 September. Sina Finance reported the same morning that queues returned to Apple Stores in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with more than 100 people outside the Lujiazui store in Shanghai and staff erecting barriers. In Shenzhen, reporters from Tencent News visited the Yitian Holiday Plaza store in Nanshan at noon on 20 September and found a queue still forming, with staff managing it behind rope barriers and reminding customers to have their reservation ready.
The big change: reservation first, walk-in stock gone
The same report is explicit: unlike previous years, the iPhone 18 Pro launch required a reservation, and in-store stock had effectively been claimed in advance. If you cross the border hoping to walk in and buy, expect to be logged for a restock instead of served immediately. Most people collecting phones at the Shenzhen store that day were picking up Pro Max models, with the burgundy 256GB and 512GB variants the most common choice.
MixC and Uniwalk Qianhai: easier for hands-on demos
The Luohu store sits on level B1 of MixC Shenzhen (Phase 1) at 1881 Bao'an South Road, connected directly to the Metro concourse at Grand Theatre Station (Lines 1, 2 and 8), which makes it the quickest store to reach from the Luohu checkpoint. The Bao'an store opened in the Uniwalk Qianhai mall on 16 August 2025 and is usually the quietest of the three. For trying the Pro against the Pro Max, buying a case or adding AppleCare+, those two are far more comfortable than the Yitian Holiday Plaza store during launch week.
Stock in practice: the Pro is available, the Pro Max is not
- Pro Max: sold out with a premium. Apple's website showed 20 October delivery for several Pro Max configurations when the buyer location was set to Nanshan, Shenzhen (Sina Finance, 18 September). Zhengzhou stores were the same: almost every Pro Max colour and capacity was out of stock, with some orders quoted for around 20 October (Tencent News, 20 September). Resellers were adding roughly CNY 300-800 for popular colours, with burgundy the most wanted.
- Pro: in stock, sometimes below list price. Some stores had iPhone 18 Pro units available for same-day collection, and third-party platforms were selling the 256GB Pro for CNY 9,099 after subsidies, CNY 900 under Apple's CNY 9,999 starting price, with one listing showing more than 46,000 orders.
- Shorter shipping windows. As of 17 September, Apple quoted around 11 working days for some Pro configurations and 15 working days for some Pro Max configurations, noticeably shorter than the three to four weeks quoted for the iPhone 17 Pro series a year earlier.
On price, we deliberately do not repeat the full breakdown here. Our conclusion, carried over from the comparison article: for the same model and capacity, buying in Hong Kong was cheaper across all six configurations, by HK$1,180 to HK$2,944, because mainland prices already include 13% VAT. The question this article answers is different: once stock, tax refunds and warranty are in the picture, is a Shenzhen purchase worth it?

Tax refunds in practice: CNY 200 minimum, 11%, six departure points
Everything in this section comes from official documents, with effective dates stated.
Who qualifies, how much, and by when you must leave
- Who: foreign nationals and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents who have not lived in mainland China for more than 183 consecutive days. Hong Kong residents show their Home Return Permit plus the original invoice and the departure tax refund application form.
- Minimum spend: CNY 200 or more, by the same traveller on the same day in the same refund store (State Taxation Administration Announcement No. 11 of 2025, lowered from CNY 500, effective 28 April 2025).
- Refund rate: 11% for goods taxed at 13% VAT, 8% for goods taxed at 9%. On a CNY 9,999 iPhone 18 Pro 256GB, that is roughly CNY 1,100.
- Deadlines: departure within 90 days of purchase. For instant refunds at the store, the commitment period was extended nationwide to 28 days (Ministry of Commerce and five other departments, notice No. 74 of 2026, issued 12 May 2026).
- 2026 simplifications: from 1 July 2026, refund forms under CNY 10,000 are subject to random spot checks rather than blanket customs inspection, and refund handling became paperless. From 1 September 2026, instant refunds can be processed nationwide, with agents verifying documents online.
Shenzhen's six departure refund ports
A joint notice from the Shenzhen finance, commerce, tax and customs authorities lists where the counters sit, and city government material from 2026 confirms Shenzhen now has six departure tax refund ports, the widest range of any mainland city, plus its own single-bag, single-code packing system. Counters generally operate 09:00-21:00, with public holiday hours posted on site.
| Departure point | Address | Refund counter |
|---|---|---|
| Luohu Port | Nanhu Road, Luohu District (inspection building) | Departure area counter, opened 31 July 2025, with staffed windows and self-service machines paying cash, bank transfer or mobile payment |
| Futian Port | 23 Yuheng Road, Futian District | Southeast corner, 3/F departure hall |
| Shenzhen Bay Port | 1 Dongbin Road, Nanshan District | Southwest corner, 2/F departure hall (passenger channels only; no counter on the vehicle lanes) |
| Man Kam To Port | 1188 Yanhe South Road, Luohu District | Southwest corner, 2/F departure hall (passenger channels only) |
| Bao'an International Airport | Bao'an Avenue, Bao'an District | Gates 308-309, international departures hall |
| Shekou Cruise Home Port | 1 Haiyun Road, Nanshan District | 2/F departure counter, roughly 09:00-18:00 |
Where to find electronics shops that are registered for refunds
The Shenzhen Commerce Bureau publishes the list of registered departure tax refund stores in batches. Among electronics retailers, chain appliance stores dominate:
- SunDan Huaqiangbei branch (Futian): on the seventh batch list. SunDan's Huaqiangbei flagship sits on Huaqiangbei Road in Futian, near Huaqiangbei Station (Lines 2 and 7) and Huaqiang Road Station (Line 1). It is also a second-batch instant refund pilot store: overseas visitors spending CNY 200 or more can claim at the counter on the third floor.
- JD Wuxing Electric Huaqiangbei (Futian): on the tenth batch list, at Qunxing Plaza, 2015 Hongli Road, Futian District, near Huaqiangbei Station.
- SunDan Coastal City branch (Nanshan): also on the seventh batch list, shop 042 on level B1 of Coastal City, about 10 minutes on foot from Houhai Station (Lines 2 and 11).
- Huaqiangbei district: the Shenzhen tax authority says the district now has 197 registered refund stores, including Xiaomi, OPPO, DJI and SunDan flagship outlets.
If you buy at an Apple Store, confirm the refund yourself
Note this carefully: as of October 2026, the refund store lists published by the Shenzhen commerce and tax authorities cover chain electronics retailers and phone brand stores, and none of the three Apple Stores appears on them. If the tax refund is a main reason for buying in Shenzhen, ask the store directly whether it is a registered refund store and whether it can issue the refund application form. If the answer is no, consider a registered electronics retailer such as SunDan Huaqiangbei, JD Wuxing Electric Huaqiangbei or SunDan Coastal City. Store lists are updated regularly, so check the Shenzhen tax bureau and commerce bureau sites before you travel.
Since March 2026 Shenzhen has also rolled out self-service refund machines nationwide-first, with official timings of about two minutes to complete and funds arriving in roughly one second, paying out to Visa cards, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay and a digital yuan hard wallet card. The city now has 14 instant refund collection points, so purchases from several shops can be handled in one stop.
Mainland iPhone vs Hong Kong iPhone: SIM, warranty, repairs and software
Every line below comes from Apple's official specifications and warranty terms, checked on 12 October 2026.
| Item | Mainland China model | Hong Kong model |
|---|---|---|
| Model numbers | A3715 / A3718 | A3714 / A3717 |
| SIM | Dual SIM: two nano-SIM cards, or one nano-SIM plus one eSIM, or two active eSIMs | Dual SIM: nano-SIM plus eSIM, and dual eSIM supported |
| eSIM activation | In mainland China, eSIM activation is supported only on models A3518, A3635, A3715, A3718 and A3721, and you must visit a China Mobile, China Telecom or China Unicom store in person with your identity document | Activate directly through any carrier or travel eSIM plan that supports eSIM |
| Warranty | Apple one-year limited warranty; Apple states it may provide iPhone warranty service only in the country or region where the device was originally sold | Apple one-year limited warranty; Apple's terms likewise allow it to limit hardware warranty service to the country or region of original sale |
| AppleCare+ | The mainland plan applies only in mainland China | The Hong Kong plan applies only in Hong Kong |
What that means in practice
- Two physical SIMs: the mainland model takes two nano-SIM cards, so a mainland and a Hong Kong number both stay physical. The Hong Kong model pairs a nano-SIM with an eSIM, or two eSIMs. Both do dual standby; the difference is the form factor.
- Repairs go back to the place of purchase: a mainland iPhone taken to Hong Kong for service may have to go back to a mainland Apple Store or authorised provider, and Apple notes that service outside the country of purchase can leave you paying shipping, duties and taxes. The reverse applies to a Hong Kong phone repaired on the mainland.
- Software and services: mainland models are subject to mainland content rules and App Store differences, while a Hong Kong model follows Hong Kong's App Store and Apple Intelligence roll-out.
Getting there from Luohu, Futian and Shenzhen Bay
- From Luohu Port (open 06:30-24:00): take Metro Line 1 two stops to Grand Theatre Station, then follow the mall passage down to B1 for Apple MixC Shenzhen. Kingglory Plaza, an instant refund pilot mall, is at Exit A of Guomao Station on the same line.
- From Futian Port (open 06:30-22:30, connecting to Metro Line 4): change to Lines 2 or 7 for Huaqiangbei Station, where Exit E leads towards SEG Plaza. SunDan Huaqiangbei and JD Wuxing Electric Huaqiangbei are both here, as are the accessory and repair halls of SEG and Yuanwang. Grey-market new phones there carry no official warranty, so weigh that against the saving.
- From Shenzhen Bay Port (passenger clearance 06:30-24:00, connecting to Metro Line 13): ride to Houhai Station and change to Lines 2 or 11. Exit G is about 10 minutes on foot from Shenzhen Bay MixC, which concentrates registered refund stores and an instant refund collection point. Window of the World Station serves Apple Yitian Holiday Plaza, and SunDan's Coastal City branch is a registered refund store on level B1 of Coastal City.
- Before you leave: the refund counters at Shenzhen Bay and Man Kam To ports are only in the passenger channels, never on the vehicle lanes. Allow extra time, as customs may ask you to open the packaging to check the serial number.
Eight practical tips
- 1. Reserve before launch day. Launch-week stock in Shenzhen is locked to reservations; without one you are logged for a restock.
- 2. Treat the Pro and Pro Max separately. The Pro is available and sometimes discounted; a Pro Max in burgundy means waiting three to four weeks.
- 3. Do not pay a premium. Reported Pro Max premiums faded within days, so paying hundreds above list risks instant depreciation.
- 4. Ask about the tax refund first. Look for the refund store sign, and remember the Apple Stores are not on the published list.
- 5. Bring the right documents. Home Return Permit, original invoice, refund application form; instant refunds need a credit card pre-authorisation as security.
- 6. Keep it sealed until you decide. Refunded goods must be unused and carried out by you, so activating the phone can void the refund.
- 7. Budget for warranty travel. A mainland phone is serviced on the mainland and a Hong Kong phone in Hong Kong; over several years that distance is a real cost.
- 8. Buy through official channels. Grey-market and refurbished units in Huaqiangbei carry no official warranty and are not always cheaper.
FAQ
Do I need a reservation to buy an iPhone 18 in Shenzhen?
Yes. From the 18 September 2026 launch, Shenzhen Apple Stores required an online reservation before collection, and walk-in stock was effectively claimed in advance. Without a reservation you can usually only register for a restock. Later restock arrangements follow Apple's own announcements.
Can Hong Kong residents claim the tax refund, and how much?
Yes. Hong Kong residents count as overseas visitors, provided they have not lived in mainland China for more than 183 consecutive days, spend at least CNY 200 in the same registered store on the same day, and take the goods out personally within 90 days. The rate is 11% for goods taxed at 13%, and 8% for goods taxed at 9%.
Can I claim a refund for an iPhone bought at an Apple Store?
Confirm with the store. As of October 2026 none of Shenzhen's three Apple Stores appears on the official refund store lists, which are dominated by chain electronics retailers and phone brand stores. For a reliable refund, buy from a registered store such as SunDan Huaqiangbei, JD Wuxing Electric Huaqiangbei or SunDan Coastal City.
Is a mainland iPhone fine to use in Hong Kong?
Calls, data and common apps work normally, and the mainland model takes two physical nano-SIM cards. The warranty, however, applies on the mainland, so repairs usually mean a trip back, and some features and App Store content follow the mainland region.
When does the iPhone Duo go on sale?
Apple's Hong Kong site lists pre-orders from 8pm on 16 October and sales from 23 October, starting at HK$17,499. Shenzhen's three Apple Stores and the Apple China online store sell in parallel; stock and reservation details follow Apple's latest updates.
