Travelling north with kids is easiest when you pick one shopping mall and let it do the work: air-conditioning, clean toilets, food, and a dedicated kids' floor. Here are eight family-friendly Shenzhen malls that Hong Kong parents go back to, each with the exact metro station and exit and what there is to do inside. One tip before you go: most indoor playgrounds require socks.

1. MixC World (Nanshan)

Getting there: Line 1, Hi-Tech Park station, Exit A — about 2 minutes on foot

One of Shenzhen's biggest street-style malls with 400+ shops. For kids there is a MELAND CLUB of about 3,000 sqm over three floors with more than 100 play features, from a mini city to a super maze and ball pit. Plenty of popular restaurants for a break.

2. UpperHills (Futian)

Getting there: Line 10, Donggualing station, Exit A — about 3 minutes on foot

A European-style low-rise town of shops in red, yellow and white. Inside there is a MELAND CLUB, Shenzhen's first LEGO store and the Gjump sports playground; the mall connects straight to Lianhuashan Park, so you can walk outdoors first and eat indoors after.

3. One Uniworld (Longhua)

Getting there: Line 4, Longhua station, Exit A — about 1 minute on foot

Huge, split into five zones from A to E, right at the metro exit. Zone A has the Yaxiaqi nature discovery park, and there is a Japanese indoor playground, ROUND1, with 40-plus sports and entertainment options including trampolines, bowling, pool, darts and karaoke — a solid rainy-day plan.

4. Futian Xinghe COCO Park (Futian)

Getting there: Lines 1/4, Shopping Park station, Exit C — about 2 minutes on foot

Six floors and around 85,000 sqm with 12 indoor streets and 8 atriums. Its family highlight is the Xingyue Lingdong indoor children's playground, plus a large outdoor play area; more than 20 popular restaurants are on site.

5. OCT Harbour (Nanshan)

Getting there: Line 9, Shenzhen Bay Park station, Exit E — about 3 minutes on foot

A 5A-rated tourism-grade waterfront mall covering about 1.25 million sqm, so it feels far more open than a typical mall. The draw for kids is the Sea Dream Aquarium on the second floor of the shopping centre; after dark the light installations around the lake respond to crowds and sound.

6. OH BAY (Bao'an)

Getting there: Line 5, Linhai station, Exit A / Line 1, Xin'an station, Exit D

A waterfront park-style retail district, famous for the roughly 128-metre Bay Glory ferris wheel: 28 all-glass cabins, about 30 minutes per revolution and wide views over Qianhai Bay and the sea bridge. It lights up at night with a musical fountain, and sunset is the best time to ride.

Which border crossing to use

Luohu Port: walk to Luohu metro station and take Line 1. Around 20 minutes to Futian Xinghe COCO Park (Shopping Park station) and about 35 minutes to MixC World (Hi-Tech Park station).

Futian Port: Futian Checkpoint station is right opposite — Line 4 then Line 1 reaches Shopping Park fastest, and Line 4 runs direct to Longhua station for One Uniworld.
