Shenzhen Late Nights Back to Hong Kong 2026: 24-Hour Huanggang, Last Trains at 5 Checkpoints and Late-Night Connections

Since the rebuilt Huanggang Port opened on 12 October 2026 it is the only 24-hour land crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Using official Immigration, Transport Department and MTR data, this guide sets out closing times and last trains for Lo Wu, Futian, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay and Liantang, plus fallback routes if you miss the last service, overnight buses and 24-hour coach fares.

Late nights in Shenzhen are easy. Getting back to Hong Kong afterwards is the hard part. On 12 October 2026 at 6:30am, the rebuilt Huanggang Port (皇岗口岸) opened: the only 24-hour land crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen dropped the old two-stop, two-check system and the shuttle bus between them, and moved to co-location with a single combined inspection that targets about five minutes. Hong Kong buses and green minibuses now drive straight into the interchange inside the terminal building, and the Lok Ma Chau to Huanggang shuttle bus is gone for good.

That changes the timetable for anyone heading home at night. This guide skips the usual opening-hours recap and sticks to the late-return scenario: what time each of the five land crossings actually shuts, when the last train and bus leave on the Hong Kong side, what to do when you miss them, which services still run after midnight, and three late-night places to eat near the checkpoints.

📌 Checkpoint hours come first-hand from the Hong Kong Immigration Department's list of control points (page updated 12 October 2026); Hong Kong transport times come from the Transport Department's checkpoint pages; rail times come from MTR station service hours. Hours, frequencies and fares change with holidays, weather and policy, so always check the latest official notice before you travel.

1. Three deadlines, not one: the checkpoint, the last Hong Kong train and the last Shenzhen train

Coach and minibus stands at the Huanggang Port public transport interchange

Most people remember only the checkpoint's closing time and assume that because a port shuts at midnight, a 11:15pm dessert is fine. In practice three clocks run at once: when passenger clearance stops, when the last Hong Kong train or bus leaves, and when the last Shenzhen Metro train runs. Whichever comes first decides your route.

One more thing worth knowing about Shenzhen-side fares: Shenzhen Metro charges by distance, starting at RMB2 for the first four kilometres, with most cross-district trips costing RMB3 to RMB6 under the official fare policy, far less than the cross-border section of the MTR.

In one line: after 22:30 Futian Port is shut, from about 23:30 the roads into Shenzhen Bay Port start closing, and after midnight Huanggang is the only land crossing left. So the real question is not whether the border is open, but whether you can still catch a train, and whether your part of Hong Kong has an overnight service at all.

2. Huanggang: the 24-hour fallback, with four overnight routes and five round-the-clock coaches

The new Huanggang Port sits in Futian district in Shenzhen, directly across the river from Lok Ma Chau in Hong Kong, and runs 24 hours a day. Its Hong Kong port area is a restricted zone open only to designated public transport. There is no public car park and no app-hailing pick-up zone, so private cars and ride-hailing vehicles cannot enter. The interchange also has no pick-up point for non-fleet taxis: only urban red taxis, New Territories green taxis and pre-booked taxi fleets may collect passengers.

Four things worth knowing: (1) most daytime routes finish between 00:30 and 01:00, after which you rely on NB73 and the three overnight minibuses; (2) to take a taxi, scan a fleet QR code at the interchange, such as Octopus "Call Taxi Easy", rather than expecting to flag one down; (3) on the Shenzhen side, level B1 holds the taxi and bus stands and level B2 connects directly to Shenzhen Metro Line 7 at Huanggang Checkpoint station, but the last Metro trains leave around 23:20 to 23:50 depending on direction, so after midnight you need a taxi or a ride-hailing car to reach the port; (4) Shenzhen authorities have publicised a night shuttle from Huanggang Port serving Shuiwei and Fumin (about RMB3, roughly 23:00 to 03:00, every 30 minutes). Arrangements may change now the new port is open, so confirm with Shenzhen port officials.

3. Lo Wu: closes at midnight, but the last trains are a double deadline

Lo Wu is the checkpoint Hongkongers know best, with passenger clearance from 06:30 to midnight. The Transport Department's Lo Wu page gives the detail: East Rail Line services from Admiralty run 06:04–23:01, from Hung Hom 05:30–23:07 and from Sha Tin 05:35–23:20. From Lo Wu station the last train to Admiralty leaves at 00:00 and the last train to Hung Hom at 00:30, with trains every three to ten minutes and about 45 minutes from Admiralty. MTR lists Lo Wu station as open from 05:45 to 00:40.

That double deadline matters: passenger clearance ends at 00:00, so you must clear both sides and be inside Lo Wu station before midnight to have any chance of the 00:30 departure. If you are still paying the bill in Dongmen at 23:35, or facing a 15-minute walk back to the station, you will not make it, and Huanggang is the answer.

On the Shenzhen side, Shenzhen Metro Line 1 runs from Lo Wu station right at the exit, one stop to Guomao and two to Laojie for the Dongmen shopping district. It is the go-to checkpoint if you have been eating and shopping around Dongmen.

4. Futian Port via Lok Ma Chau Spur Line: 22:30, and the most common miss

Futian Port, at 23 Yuheng Road in Futian district, is reached through the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point, which runs 06:30 to 22:30. MTR's Lok Ma Chau station is open 06:28 to 23:05 with a last train at 22:55. The Transport Department is clearer still: East Rail Line services from Admiralty to Lok Ma Chau run 06:10–21:29, from Hung Hom 21:35 and from Mong Kok East 21:38, with trains every nine to 14 minutes and about 50 minutes end to end. On the road, KMB route B1 to Tin Tsz Estate leaves the control point until 22:55 at HK$15.3, and green minibus 75 to Yuen Long Fuk Hong Street until 22:55 at HK$10.

In other words, 21:29 from Admiralty is your last direct train. Many people assume the East Rail Line runs to around 23:00 everywhere; the Lok Ma Chau branch stops an hour and a half earlier, and that is the single most common late-night mistake.

If you miss it, you have two options. If you are already around San Tin or Lok Ma Chau, switch to KMB B11 (last departure towards the port 00:00), NL B12 (00:30), Citybus B13 (00:30) or minibuses 44B, 44B1 or 78 into the new Huanggang Port. If you are still in central Shenzhen, say around COCO Park, just call a taxi or Didi to the Shenzhen side of Huanggang Port, clear the border and pick up an overnight bus, rather than waiting for a train that is not coming.

5. Shenzhen Bay Port: closes at midnight, but buses leave as late as 00:20

Shenzhen Bay Port sits at Dongjiaotou in Nanshan district and works on co-location, with the passenger terminal and private car clearance open 06:30 to midnight and cargo clearance around the clock. The Transport Department warns that the roads to the port close about 30 minutes before it stops operating, so after roughly 23:30 do not plan to drive there.

The upside is that the Hong Kong buses are timed well: B2 from Yuen Long station leaves the port until 00:20 at HK$15.8; B2P from Tin Tsz Estate until 00:20 at HK$11.3; B3 from Tuen Mun Ferry Pier until 00:20 at HK$16.5; minibus 618 to Tin Shui Wai until 00:20 at HK$15.1; B3A from King Shan Estate only until 23:35; and B3X from Tuen Mun town centre at 22:10 on weekdays or 23:10 on weekends and public holidays at HK$16.5.

On the Shenzhen side both Metro Line 11 and Line 13 serve Shenzhen Bay Port station, about 100 metres from the arrivals hall, which makes Houhai, Coastal City, MixC and Shekou quick to reach. Put simply, if it is after 22:30 but before midnight, this is the crossing to use; it beats Futian Port, which shuts at 22:30.

6. Heung Yuen Wai and Liantang: 22:00, so mind the last buses

The Heung Yuen Wai control point operates 07:00 to 22:00, connecting on the Shenzhen side to Liantang Port and Shenzhen Metro Lines 2 and 8 at Liantang Checkpoint station. The last services back to Hong Kong: Citybus B7 to Sheung Shui until 22:20 and B8 to Tai Wai until 22:20; KMB B9 to Tuen Mun until 22:30 on weekdays and from 07:15 to 22:30 at weekends and on public holidays; and green minibus 59S to Sheung Shui until 22:30. Fares start at about HK$10, according to the operators.

So if you have spent the day in Yantian, Dameisha, Pingshan or Longgang, start heading back by about 21:30. There are no night services here, and rerouting to Lo Wu or Huanggang can add an hour.

8. Three late-night refuelling stops, one per checkpoint area

If you want a meal or somewhere to sit before crossing, these three sit in Luohu, Futian and Nanshan and all trade past midnight. Hours come from restaurant and platform listings, so re-check them with Meituan or Dianping on the day.

1. Luohu: Tiepiwu Seafood BBQ, Dongmen

Where: 2/F, Department Store Plaza, 3020 Shennan East Road, Luohu district, next to Master Feng Hotpot. Metro: Line 5, Dongmen station, about three minutes on foot from Exit N. Hours: 16:30 to 03:30 the next morning. Per person: around RMB80, with Typhoon Shelter prawns at RMB58 and Cantonese crispy roast chicken at RMB48. Seafood stir-fries and charcoal barbecue until 03:30 make it the last stop before Lo Wu closes at midnight.

2. Futian: Haidilao Hotpot, Great China branch

Where: Unit L4-11, 4/F, Great China International Exchange Square, 1 Fuhua Road 1st, Futian district. Metro: Lines 1 and 4, Convention and Exhibition Center station, about a five-minute walk. Hours: 09:00 to 07:00 the next morning. Per person: around RMB120. A car to Huanggang Port on the Shenzhen side takes about 15 to 25 minutes, making this the safe bet when you need a meal after 00:30.

3. Nanshan: Tongren Siji music-themed restaurant, Coastal City

Where: 2/F Poly Cultural Plaza, Coastal City, Nanshan district (Bao Li Lai Mi C6). Metro: Lines 2, 8 and 11, Houhai station, Exit E. Hours: 24 hours. Per person: around RMB100 for coconut chicken hotpot, with live band performances. Houhai is only a few stops from Shenzhen Bay Port station, so you can eat and cross straight afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still cross back to Hong Kong at 2am?

Yes, but only at Huanggang, the sole 24-hour land crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Lo Wu, Futian, Shenzhen Bay and Liantang all close. Overnight, the Hong Kong port area is a restricted zone open only to designated public transport, with no public car park and no app-hailing pick-up point.

What time does Shenzhen Metro close, and what if I miss it?

Official line-network operating hours are 06:30 to 23:00, with last trains varying by direction; at checkpoint stations the final departure usually falls between 23:20 and 23:50. Check the Shenzhen Metro app or WeChat mini programme for the exact time on the day. If you miss it, take a taxi or a Didi to the Shenzhen side of Huanggang Port, clear the combined inspection, and continue by overnight bus or 24-hour coach.

Can I call a ride-hailing car at Huanggang Port?

Not on the Hong Kong side: no pick-up point exists for non-fleet taxis, so neither ordinary radio taxis nor app-hailing cars can enter, and only urban taxis, New Territories taxis and pre-booked taxi fleets may pick up at the interchange. The Shenzhen side is different: port authorities there provide a ride-hailing pick-up area, so the smoothest pattern is Didi on the Shenzhen side and a fleet taxi on the Hong Kong side.

What is the most expensive way home late at night?

Among public transport options, the priciest is the 616S overnight minibus to Mong Kok at HK$28.5. The five 24-hour short-haul coach routes run from HK$45 to HK$63. A late-night urban taxi from the new Huanggang Port to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island costs noticeably more than the bus, so split it if you are travelling together. Fares follow the Transport Department and operator notices.

Are there special arrangements on holidays or during typhoons?

Yes. Around major holidays such as Lunar New Year, New Year's Eve and the Mid-Autumn and National Day period, the government often extends checkpoint hours or adds overnight buses, for example keeping Shenzhen Bay Port open around the clock or extending Lo Wu until 2am. Typhoons and heavy rain can suspend cross-border transport altogether. Check the latest notices from the Hong Kong Immigration Department, the Transport Department and Shenzhen port authorities before travelling.
