When it comes to having fun in Shenzhen, Hong Kong people usually only think of Futian, Luohu, and Nanshan, but in fact Longhua and Longgang (north-central Shenzhen) also have quite a few distinctive attractions: free ancient towns, golf resort areas, large sports parks, and they're not as crowded as the city center.
🏘️ Gankeng Hakka Ancient Town — Free, Picturesque, and Perfect for Photos
Gankeng Ancient Town (Longgang District) is a Hakka cultural town: stone-paved streets, old buildings, small bridges over flowing water, free admission, and plenty of snack shops and souvenir stores. Dress up nicely and go take photos — it's very atmospheric. Take Metro Line 10 to Gankeng Station for direct access.
⛳ Mission Hills Resort / MH Mall
Mission Hills (Longhua District) is a large golf resort area with world-class golf courses, hotels, and the MH Mall shopping center. Even if you don't play golf, you can still go shopping and dining there. The surroundings are lush and green, making it great for a family day.
🏟️ Universiade Center / Longgang Central City
The Universiade Center (Longgang District) is a large sports complex with a stadium and swimming pool, surrounded by parks and shopping malls. If you want to catch a concert or sporting event, keep an eye on the Universiade Center's schedule. The Longgang Central City area also has newer malls like Wanda Plaza.
Transportation Tips
- Longhua and Longgang are farther from the border checkpoints. From Futian Port, take the MTR (Lines 4/10) for about 30-50 minutes
- For more convenience, you can hail a ride (Didi) — about 30-45 minutes from the city center (depending on location)
- Prices in this area are lower than in the city center, so restaurants and hotels offer great value for money
- For trip planning, using Amap is the most convenient
