From 8 September: Two Shenzhen Metro Lines Trial New Timetables

Shenzhen Metro has issued an operations notice: from 8 September 2026, Shenzhen Metro Lines 2&8 and Line 11 will trial new weekday timetables, mainly adding two "express" services that skip stops. For anyone who regularly takes the metro to the eastern coast to see the sea, or travels from the airport into the city centre, this adjustment directly cuts commuting time.

Lines 2&8: Xichong Station towards Chiwan Station, departing from Haishan Station

Lines 2&8 add an express service running from Xichong Station towards Chiwan Station, operating 3 trains every weekday.

• The express departs Haishan Station daily at 11:30, 12:30 and 13:30
• It passes through 10 stations without stopping: Shatoujiao Station, Wutongshan South Station, Liantang Station, Xianhu Road Station, Liantang Checkpoint Station, Xinxiu Station, Hubei Station, Grand Theatre Station, Yannan Station and Huaqiangbei Station
• The journey from Haishan Station to Gangxia North Station is about 10 minutes faster than a regular train

In other words, if you cross the border at Liantang Checkpoint and plan to go to Grand Theatre or Huaqiangbei, note that this express does not stop at either station. To catch the express, board at Haishan Station — there are three departures around midday; at other times, take a regular train.

Line 11: Bitou Station towards Hongling South Station, departing from Airport Station

Line 11 adds an express service running from Bitou Station towards Hongling South Station, also operating 3 trains every weekday.

• The express departs Airport Station daily at 11:30, 12:30 and 13:30
• It passes through 5 stations without stopping: Bihaiwan Station, Bao'an Station, Nanshan Station, Houhai Station and Hongshuwan South Station
• The journey from Airport Station to Chegongmiao Station is about 5 minutes 30 seconds faster than a regular train

This service is ideal for anyone landing at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and heading into the Chegongmiao area of Futian. Note that it does not stop at Houhai Station — if you are going to Shenzhen Bay MixC or the Houhai commercial area, skip the express and take a regular service.

Lines 2&8 extra services: note you may need to change trains at Yantian Road Station

In addition, Lines 2&8 are putting more 4-car trains into service on the Shenwai High School Station to Xichong Station section. During weekday morning and evening peaks, most 6-car trains will terminate and turn back at Yantian Road Station.

If you are continuing to Hong'anwei Station, Yantianxu Station, Dameisha Station, Xiaomeisha Station or Xichong Station, note these two points:

• Get off in advance at Shenwai High School Station and change to a 4-car train
• Or get off at Yantian Road Station and change to a 4-car train via the concourse

This change most directly affects visitors heading to Dameisha and Xiaomeisha for the water. Where previously one line ran straight through, during peak hours you now need one extra change — before setting off, check the train's front display and platform announcements to avoid waiting for nothing.

What does this mean for visitors from Hong Kong? Three checkpoints affected

On the surface these are two local Shenzhen transport stories, but in practice they are very relevant to trips to Shenzhen:

• Luohu Checkpoint: after crossing, you change to Line 1 at Grand Theatre Station or Line 2 at Hubei Station — both are stations the new express skips, so departing from Luohu will not be "faster"; take a regular train as before. Meanwhile, those crossing at Liantang Checkpoint should know the express does not stop at Liantang Checkpoint Station
• Futian Checkpoint: after crossing, change to Line 4, then transfer again at Convention & Exhibition Center or Civic Center; if your destination is Chegongmiao or Gangxia North, the Line 11 express can help
• Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint: after crossing you are on Line 13 at Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station; when transferring to Line 11 or Lines 2&8, pay attention to the express stopping pattern — if you are heading to Houhai or Nanshan, do not board the express by mistake

Simple way to remember: the express is a "skip-stop train", running at three midday slots from 11:30 to 13:30, departing from Haishan Station and Airport Station. If unsure, just take a regular service — the difference is at most 10 minutes, not worth getting off at the wrong station for.

These two lines link up plenty of popular destinations, so here is a quick round-up:

• Dameisha Beach Park: get off at Dameisha Station on Line 8 and you are there; free entry, one of Shenzhen's most convenient beaches, packed on summer holidays
• Xiaomeisha: Xiaomeisha Station; after recent renovations it has an ocean world and seafront shops — a newer attraction in eastern Shenzhen
• Xichong Station: the eastern end of Line 8; from the exit you can reach Xichong seafront, the terminus of the "sea-view line", great for photos
• Xianhu Botanical Garden and Hongfa Temple: Xianhu Road Station; one of Shenzhen's largest botanical gardens, excellent for an autumn hike
• Liantang Checkpoint: Liantang Checkpoint Station; a newer checkpoint with fewer crowds than Luohu — worth considering for the return trip
• Dongmen Old Street: Laojie Station; Shenzhen's oldest pedestrian shopping district, with food, shopping and entertainment all in one
• Huaqiangbei commercial area: Huaqiangbei Station; the hub for electronics, accessories and repairs
• Houhai / Shenzhen Bay MixC: Houhai Station; the Line 11 express does not stop here, so take a regular service if you are heading to the mall

Practical tips

• The whole Shenzhen Metro network supports AlipayHK / WeChat Pay HK QR code entry, so there is no need to buy a Shenzhen Tong card; use the "Shenzhen Metro" app or Amap to check real-time services
• Express trains usually show an LED display at the front — take a look before boarding, and ask platform staff if unsure
• Shenzhen Metro fares are distance-based, starting at ¥2; short city trips are generally ¥2 to ¥5; Shenzhen Tong or QR code payment gets a discount
• For Dameisha and Xiaomeisha: weekends and holidays are extremely busy — even without a train change, allow at least 20 minutes to queue for the gates
• From the airport into the city, if you are not in a hurry, regular Line 11 services are more frequent — no need to wait half an hour for the express

What time does the express run?

Both trial express services depart from their designated stations (Haishan Station / Airport Station) daily at 11:30, 12:30 and 13:30 — 3 trains each per weekday.

Does the express stop at Luohu or Futian Checkpoint?

No. The express runs skip-stop, calling only at selected stations; for Luohu and Futian Checkpoint, take regular services as before.

Is the new arrangement permanent?

The notice states it is a "trial" weekday timetable; Shenzhen Metro will adjust it based on actual passenger flows, so it is best to double-check on the official app before you travel.

Do I need to change trains to get to Dameisha?

During weekday morning and evening peaks, some trains terminate and turn back at Yantian Road Station; passengers heading to Dameisha, Xiaomeisha or Xichong must change to a 4-car train at Shenwai High School Station or Yantian Road Station.

Express services are not just on two lines: Line 6 has one too

Besides the newly added Lines 2&8 and Line 11 services, Line 6 already trialled an "express" earlier: on weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00, one train departs in each direction on the hour, 7 pairs (14 trains) a day, skipping 5 stations — Xitou, Shutianpu, Science Park, Hanling and Sports Center — with the whole journey about 10% faster than a regular train (saving just over 6 minutes). Line 14 was also one of the earliest Shenzhen lines to trial express / semi-direct services.

Taking Lines 2&8 to Dameisha and Xiaomeisha: what to note

This adjustment also adds more 4-car trains on the "Shenwai High School Station to Xichong Station" section. During weekday morning and evening peaks, most 6-car trains terminate and turn back at Yantian Road Station; if you are heading to Hong'anwei, Yantianxu, Dameisha, Xiaomeisha or Xichong Station, get off in advance at Shenwai High School Station, or change to a 4-car train at Yantian Road Station (via the concourse) — do not assume that boarding Line 8 means you will reach the terminus.
