1. Shenzhen Museum (Futian Civic Center)
Shenzhen's main comprehensive museum, split into the History and Folk Culture Museum and the Ancient Art Museum. The History and Folk Culture Museum is at the Civic Center, with exhibitions covering everything from the Neolithic era to Reform and Opening Up — come here if you want to understand Shenzhen's history in a day; there are also Guangdong folk culture and maritime culture galleries inside.

The collection focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese art and contemporary works, with frequent exhibition changes, and it shares a cultural district with Shenzhen Library North Branch.

The architecture is very distinctive, and the plaza outside is also a photo spot.

Extremely close to Dongmen and Luohu Port, so you can head straight to Dongmen for a meal afterwards.

10. Nanshan Museum (Nanshan, near Shenzhen Bay Port)
The largest district-level comprehensive museum in Shenzhen by single-building floor area, covering about 50,000 square metres, officially opened in January 2018. The permanent exhibition covers Nanshan's history from ancient times to the present, plus an on-site reconstruction of the "Haojiang Jin Tomb" and occasional blockbuster temporary exhibitions — one of the most popular trendy photo spots in the Greater Bay Area in recent years. If you cross the border at Shenzhen Bay Port, take Line 13 then transfer to Line 1 and you'll arrive in about half an hour.

Are Shenzhen's museums really free?
