Want to explore Shenzhen with a bit more culture? Shenzhen actually has plenty of free museums and art galleries — fully air-conditioned, comfortable, and perfect for escaping the heat or rain. Most are free to enter but require advance booking. Here are a few worth visiting:
🏛️ Shenzhen Museum (History & Folklore Branch)
The Shenzhen Museum is a great place to learn how Shenzhen grew from a small fishing village into a major city, with history halls, folklore galleries, and a range of special exhibitions. Free entry, but usually requires a WeChat reservation. Located in Futian District.
🎨 Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition (Two-in-One Venue)
The Museum of Contemporary Art + Urban Planning Exhibition (the "Two Museums") in Futian District is a hotspot for architecture lovers: the striking white geometric exterior is a sight in itself, and inside you'll find contemporary art exhibitions alongside Shenzhen's urban planning displays. Free with reservation — and perfect for photos.
🖼️ Guan Shanyue Art Museum / He Xiangning Art Museum
If you enjoy painting, check out the Guan Shanyue Art Museum and the He Xiangning Art Museum (in the OCT area of Nanshan District). They focus on traditional Chinese painting and modern art, offer free entry, and rotate their exhibitions regularly.
🎫 How to Book (Important!)
- Most venues require advance booking — walk-ins are often turned away
- Use WeChat to search for the venue's official public account or mini program (e.g. "Shenzhen Museum"), then pick your date and time slot
- Show your booking QR code + ID at the entrance (Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong & Macau residents works too)
