Claw machines and gashapon are the cheapest fun you can have on a day trip from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. You barely need to leave the checkpoint: one or two metro stops and you are standing in front of a wall of machines, and the Japanese capsule-toy chains have followed the crowds across the border, so Chiikawa, Sanrio, Gundam and Pokemon capsules are all there for the taking.
This guide sticks strictly to claw-machine rooms and gashapon specialty stores — no blind boxes, no buying sealed cases. Every entry below gives you an address, the metro line, station and exit, plus what a play actually costs, grouped by the three checkpoint zones Hong Kong readers care about most: Luohu (Dongmen and Guomao), Futian (Convention and Exhibition Center and Chegongmiao), and Shenzhen Bay (Nanshan, Shekou and Qianhai).
Prices and details are current as of October 2026. Machine prices shift with the cabinet, the series and whatever promotion is running, so check the machine label or the day's Meituan / Dianping package before you commit.
What is different about playing in Shenzhen?
- Two kinds of venue. Dedicated claw rooms — Jargee, Xiaolu Zhi Wu, Hot Air Balloon, KK Cat — do nothing but claw machines, so the cabinets are new, the plush is good, and many run a guaranteed-win or points-exchange rule. Big arcades such as FUNDOLAND, Galaxy Legend and Fu Zhua Zhua mix claws in with racers, rhythm games and basketball.
- You play with tokens, not coins. Buy a token package at the counter or on Meituan; RMB 50 typically buys around 60 tokens, or roughly RMB 0.5–0.9 per token.
- Gashapon is priced up front. Every capsule machine shows its own price, which varies by series, so there is no risk of walking away empty-handed.
- Taking prizes home is fine. Plush toys and capsules are ordinary toys; keep quantities sensible and for personal use, and check customs rules on toys before you fill a suitcase.

Eight habits that raise your hit rate
- Pick plush that is stacked or already at the chute. A bear sitting on top of a heap, or leaning against the prize door, can be flicked straight into the hole — far better value than a big toy flat on the floor of the cabinet.
- Learn the second press. On many cabinets, pressing the button again the moment the claw closes strengthens the grip. Half a second late and the plush slips.
- Watch for a machine that has just paid out. Claws work on an accumulated-coin counter. Right after a win, the machine usually needs several more plays before the strong grip returns, so do not pile in behind the last winner.
- Choose a specialist room. Jargee, Xiaolu Zhi Wu and Hot Air Balloon run guaranteed-win thresholds or points exchange, so even a plush you do not love converts into something else.
- Rotate the claw before dropping. A quick left-right swing lines the three prongs up across the toy's waist. Grabbing the head almost always slips.
- Do not chase one toy. Five misses on the same cabinet means move on. The machine setting matters more than your technique.
- Buy the bigger package. The jump from RMB 50/60 coins to RMB 88/120 coins cuts the unit price by more than a third.
- Read the display before spinning a capsule. Sample figures and the series name are always shown, so confirm the character you want is actually in that set — and watch for the “final day” or limited-edition tags.
Routing from each checkpoint
- Luohu Port. Take Line 1 to Grand Theatre for Xiaolu Zhi Wu and Galaxy Legend in the same mall, then head to Laojie for the Dimension No.9 gashapon floor and the Dongmen shopping strip.
- Futian Port. Line 4 to Convention and Exhibition Center puts you at Niuniu Cheng the moment you surface; one stop on Line 1 to Gangxia covers Jargee at One Avenue and Hot Air Balloon at CentralWalk, with KK Cat a few stops further at Chegongmiao.
- Shenzhen Bay Port. Lines 2 and 11 reach Houhai and Sea World for Galaxy Legend (MixC World) and Fu Zhua Zhua (Shekou), and the port also runs a free Bao'an central district shuttle towards Qianhai Uniwalk for the gashapon shop and GUNDAM BASE on B2 — check the latest notice for times.
FAQ
How much cheaper is this than playing in Hong Kong?
At the packages recorded in October 2026, a token costs roughly RMB 0.5–0.9 and most cabinets take two, so a play works out at about RMB 1–2. Add the guaranteed-win thresholds and points exchange that many Shenzhen rooms run, and the same budget buys noticeably more plays and more plush. Actual token prices and coins per play follow the in-store signage.
Which venue is easiest to win at?
Local and Hong Kong write-ups both put Jargee at One Avenue and Xiaolu Zhi Wu at KK Mall at the top of the easy list — Jargee's claws grip well and players report a win every three or four attempts, while Xiaolu Zhi Wu has been measured at two. Hot Air Balloon at CentralWalk runs a guaranteed-win threshold, which makes it the friendliest choice for beginners and children. Positioning and claw strength still vary machine by machine.
Where should I go if I only want gashapon?
Start with Niuniu Cheng on the ground floor of Greater China HUA Plaza in Futian, billed as the largest capsule-toy floor in the country at about RMB 20–35 a spin, with card and figure shops alongside and free entry. For officially licensed capsules that keep pace with Japan, head to a GASHAPON Bandai Official Shop — Dimension No.9 in Dongmen or B2 of Qianhai Uniwalk — where every machine is clearly priced.
Do I need cash, and how do I pay?
Essentially everywhere takes WeChat Pay, including WeChat Pay HK, and AlipayHK; you can also buy a package on Meituan or Dianping and scan the code on arrival. Cash is not essential, though a handful of older cabinets are coin-only, so keep a few RMB 1 coins handy.
Is it suitable for young children?
Yes. There is generally no age limit, and staff at the specialist rooms are used to families. Keep an eye on small children around the glass cabinets and moving claws, and note that some arcade shooting and racing machines have height limits shown on the cabinet.
