Shenzhen now runs two very different kinds of duty-free retail: port duty-free shops operated by Shenzhen Duty Free Group at land crossings, and a downtown duty-free store that opened at UpperHills in Futian on 26 August 2025. For Hong Kong readers the only question that matters is simpler: for the same bottle of cognac or the same bottle of perfume, how much do you actually save in Shenzhen versus Hong Kong? This guide answers that with published prices rather than impressions. The Shenzhen column uses the official iDutyFree online shop run by Shenzhen Duty Free Group together with DFS; the Hong Kong column uses the official Duty Zero by cdf online shop at Hong Kong International Airport. Customs allowances, purchase eligibility and collection rules come from government and operator sources. All prices were checked in October 2026 and move with exchange rates and promotions, so re-check before you buy.
The 60-second verdict
- Chinese baijiu: Shenzhen wins outright. Moutai, Wuliangye, Xijiu and Fenjiu do not appear in the Hong Kong airport duty-free liquor catalogue at all. If you want national-grade baijiu, Shenzhen is effectively your only duty-free route.
- Western spirits: Hong Kong is not the loser. On published prices, a 1-litre bottle of Hennessy VSOP is CNY 796 in Shenzhen versus HK$840 in Hong Kong duty free, roughly CNY 717. Hong Kong comes out about 10 per cent cheaper.
- Perfume and skincare: Hong Kong airport duty free generally posts lower shelf prices, but Hong Kong only sells duty free when you fly, while Shenzhen offers port shops plus a downtown store that can be stacked with discounts and coupons.
- Shenzhen's real edge is stacked discounts, not headline prices. The downtown store's official figure is an 11 to 25 per cent saving against mainland retail prices; port shops have added opening discounts such as 30 per cent off at Liantang.
1. Two kinds of duty-free shop, two completely different rules
- Port duty-free shops (Shenzhen Duty Free Group): inside the restricted areas at Luohu, Huanggang, Wenjindu, Shatoujiao, Futian, Shenzhen Bay, Liantang, Shekou and Bao'an Airport. You buy as you exit the mainland and carry the goods away immediately. No flight ticket required. The group was founded in January 1980 as China's first state-owned duty-free operator and now covers nine Shenzhen ports.
- Downtown duty-free store (China Duty Free, Shenzhen Duty Free and Shum Yip): opened at UpperHills, Futian on 26 August 2025, close to 3,000 square metres, the largest downtown duty-free store in China. The model is buy downtown, collect on departure at Bao'an Airport or Shekou cruise terminal, and eligibility is restricted (see section 5).
The downtown store carries beauty and skincare, watches and jewellery, premium liquor, Chinese trend brands and Shenzhen-made electronics, plus a whisky room and a skincare experience area. Officials put the duty-free saving at 11 to 25 per cent against mainland retail prices, compared with roughly 8 to 9 per cent for the standard departure tax refund.
2. Price check one: cognac and whisky
Both columns below are published prices from each operator's official online shop, checked in October 2026. Conversion uses a reference rate of HKD 1 = CNY 0.854.
| Item | Shenzhen duty free | Hong Kong duty free | In CNY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hennessy VSOP cognac, 1 litre | CNY 796 | HK$840 | about CNY 717 |
| Hennessy VSOP cognac, 700 ml | CNY 509 | not listed in 700 ml | - |
| Johnnie Walker 18 Year Old, 1 litre | not listed | HK$905 | about CNY 773 |
| Johnnie Walker Black Triple Cask, 1 litre | not listed | HK$335 | about CNY 286 |
| Chivas Regal 15 Year Old, 1 litre | not listed | HK$645 | about CNY 551 |
| Ballantine's 21 Year Old, 70 cl | not listed | HK$1,335 | about CNY 1140 |
| Hibiki Japanese whisky, 70 cl | not listed | HK$970 | about CNY 828 |
| Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial, 75 cl | not listed | HK$425 | about CNY 363 |
The lesson is blunt: Western spirits are not automatically cheaper in Shenzhen. Hong Kong's airport duty-free range in whisky is also much broader, covering single malts, Japanese whisky and independent bottlings, while Shenzhen duty free concentrates on cognac and mainstream brands. Where Shenzhen does win is the value end of cognac, for example Louis Royer-style special VSOP brandy at CNY 209 for 700 ml (list price CNY 399).
3. Price check two: Chinese baijiu, a Shenzhen monopoly
| Item | Shenzhen duty free | List price shown |
|---|---|---|
500 ml | CNY 198 | CNY 299 |
| 青花汾酒 30 年復興版 53 度 500 ml(出口版) | CNY 589 | CNY 1,199 |
| 國台玉 龍擁天下 sauce-aroma baijiu 53 度 500 ml | CNY 228 | - |
Two warnings. Moutai pricing swings widely and the shops distinguish taxed versions from duty-free versions, so ask at the counter. And baijiu is an alcoholic product: bringing it back to Hong Kong is subject to the same allowances and declaration rules as any other spirits.
4. Price check three: perfume and cosmetics
| Perfume and skincare (Hong Kong duty-free published price) | Price | In CNY |
|---|---|---|
| Versace Eros 男士淡香精 100 毫升 | HK$975 | about CNY 832 |
| Dior J'adore 走珠淡香精 20 毫升 | HK$550 | about CNY 470 |
| Hugo Boss Boss Bottled 淡香精 50 毫升 | HK$877 | about CNY 749 |
| Yves Saint Laurent Y 淡香精 60 毫升 | HK$1,230 | about CNY 1050 |
Shenzhen publishes skincare prices too. The official Shenzhen Duty Free online shop lists Shiseido Revitalizing Treatment Softener (150 ml) at CNY 139 against a CNY 519 list price, and the matching emulsion (100 ml) at CNY 152 against CNY 611. Note that these are dated clearance offers with stated expiry dates in 2027, not regular shelf prices.
So judge perfume and cosmetics on three layers. First, the downtown store's official 11 to 25 per cent saving is measured against mainland retail, not against Hong Kong. Second, Hong Kong airport duty free is already duty free and regularly runs 20 to 30 per cent promotions. Third, Shenzhen lets you stack port opening discounts and membership coupons. The practical move is to look up the same product on both official shops and run the currency conversion before you commit.
5. Allowances, eligibility and how you collect
Downtown store: you must be leaving within 60 days
Under the Interim Measures for the Administration of Downtown Duty-Free Stores, the store sells to travellers who will leave the mainland within 60 days by air or international cruise, including but not limited to Chinese nationals. Goods are not carried away on the spot: they must be collected at the duty-free pick-up point inside the departure restricted area and taken out in one trip. In Shenzhen that means Bao'an Airport or Shekou cruise terminal. If you are only doing a same-day land-border round trip, you cannot use the downtown store.
Port shops: buy on exit, collect immediately
Opening hours matter: Luohu 06:30 to 24:00, Futian 06:30 to 22:30, Shenzhen Bay 06:30 to 24:00, Liantang 07:00 to 22:00, Huanggang 24 hours.
Entering the mainland
Under General Administration of Customs Announcement No. 54 of 2010, inbound resident travellers get duty-free release for personal articles obtained overseas up to CNY 5,000 in total value, and inbound non-resident travellers for articles intended to remain in China up to CNY 2,000; tobacco and alcohol follow separate rules. Travellers arriving from Hong Kong or Macao may bring in 200 cigarettes (or 10 cigars, or 250 g of cut tobacco) and 0.75 litre of alcoholic beverages above 12 per cent ABV. Travellers crossing the border more than once in 15 days may not bring in alcohol duty free at all. The composite tax rate on cigarettes and alcohol is 50 per cent.
Returning to Hong Kong
Travellers aged 18 or above may bring in 1 litre of spirits duty free. Since 16 October 2024 Hong Kong has applied a two-tier duty on liquor above 30 per cent ABV: the portion of the import price above HK$200 is taxed at 10 per cent instead of 100 per cent, while the first HK$200 remains at 100 per cent. The new rate applies only to quantities of 1 litre or less. That materially changes the maths on premium spirits.
6. Six real duty-free shops, with addresses and metro
1. Shenzhen Downtown Duty-Free Store (UpperHills, Futian)
Address: UpperHills South, 5001 Huanggang Road, Futian District. Metro Line 10, Donggualing station, Exit A, about a 500 m walk. Opened on 26 August 2025, close to 3,000 square metres, the largest downtown duty-free store in China, with a whisky room, a skincare experience area and a Shenzhen tech display corridor. Prices: an official 11 to 25 per cent saving against mainland retail. Collection: on departure at Bao'an Airport or Shekou cruise terminal.
2. Luohu Port Duty Free (Luohu)
Location: inside the Luohu Port joint inspection building, after mainland exit formalities and before the Luohu bridge. Metro Line 1, Luohu station, Exit A, connecting to the MTR East Rail Luohu station. The port is open 06:30 to 24:00 and is one of the busiest land crossings in Shenzhen. Focus: cigarettes, spirits, perfume and chocolate. Reference price: Hennessy VSOP cognac 700 ml at CNY 509.
3. Futian Port Duty Free (Futian)
Location: inside the Futian Port joint inspection building, with large shops on both the inbound and outbound sides selling tobacco, alcohol, cosmetics and snacks. Shenzhen Metro Line 4, Futian Checkpoint station; from Hong Kong take the MTR East Rail to Lok Ma Chau and walk across. Open 06:30 to 22:30, ideal for same-day trips. Reference price: Louis Royer-style special VSOP brandy 700 ml at CNY 209.
4. Huanggang Port Duty Free (Futian)
Location: Huanggang Port, the only 24-hour land crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. If you are heading back late at night it is your last chance for duty-free tobacco and spirits. The port is being rebuilt and currently uses a temporary passenger terminal; the new building will link directly to Shenzhen Metro Line 7, Huanggang Checkpoint station, so check official notices before travelling. Reference price: Marquis Roger-style Napoleon blend 700 ml at CNY 79.
5. Shenzhen Bay Port Duty Free (Nanshan)
Location: the Shenzhen Bay Port passenger terminal. Shenzhen Metro Line 13, Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint station. The port uses single-location clearance and is open 06:30 to 24:00. An inbound duty-free shop at Shenzhen Bay opened for trial operation on 20 May 2026, so you can now buy on the way into Shenzhen as well. Reference price: Shiseido Revitalizing Treatment Softener 150 ml at CNY 139 (dated clearance offer).
6. Liantang Port Inbound Duty Free (Luohu)
Location: east side of the Liantang Port inbound hall, Luohu District, 120 square metres. Trial operation began on 20 May 2026, focused on premium liquor and tobacco including Moutai and Hennessy, with most goods at 30 per cent off during the opening period, stackable with the duty-free saving. Getting there: the port is not on top of a metro station; the nearest is Shenzhen Metro Line 2 or 8, Liantang station, about a 15-minute walk or a short connecting ride, or arrive directly from the Hong Kong side via the Heung Yuen Wai control point. Open 07:00 to 22:00 and generally quieter than Luohu.
Shenzhen Duty Free also runs shops at Wenjindu Port (07:00 to 22:00, quieter), Shatoujiao Port (pending rebuilding), Shekou Port and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, the last of which only works if you are flying or sailing.
Practical tips
- Do one thing first: compare the two official shops. Both the Shenzhen Duty Free iDutyFree shop and the Hong Kong airport duty-free shop publish prices online. Five minutes and a currency conversion will settle most decisions.
- Remember the exchange rate moves. This guide converts at the October 2026 reference rate; a one or two per cent swing in HKD against CNY is enough to flip which side is cheaper.
- Use the downtown store early if you qualify. With a departure inside 60 days it has the widest range and the most comfortable shopping. Without one, port shops are your only option.
- Never assume duty free means cheaper. Removing tax does not remove retail pricing, brand strategy or promotion calendars.
- Plan for liquids. Spirits cannot go in hand luggage on a flight, so they must be checked in; land crossings avoid that problem but not the customs allowances.
FAQ
Can Hong Kong residents shop at the downtown duty-free store in Shenzhen?
Yes, provided you will leave the mainland by air or international cruise within 60 days. Eligibility covers Chinese nationals and is not limited to mainland residents, so Hong Kong residents qualify; you will need a valid travel document plus a ticket or cruise booking dated within 60 days. A same-day land-border round trip does not qualify.
Is Shenzhen duty free always cheaper than Hong Kong?
No. On published prices, a 1-litre bottle of Hennessy VSOP costs CNY 796 in Shenzhen and about CNY 717 equivalent in Hong Kong airport duty free. Shenzhen's clear advantage is Chinese baijiu, which Hong Kong duty free simply does not stock, plus stacked discounts on beauty products.
Can I bring duty-free alcohol from Shenzhen back to Hong Kong?
Yes, within limits. Travellers aged 18 or above may bring in 1 litre of spirits duty free; anything above that must be declared and taxed. Travelling into the mainland from Hong Kong or Macao the allowance is 0.75 litre of alcohol above 12 per cent ABV. Always check the latest customs announcement.
Can I take the goods away immediately?
At port duty-free shops, yes. At the downtown store, no: goods must be collected at the pick-up point inside the departure restricted area at Bao'an Airport or Shekou cruise terminal and carried out in one trip.
When were these prices checked?
All published prices were checked in October 2026 from the official Shenzhen Duty Free shop and the official Hong Kong airport duty-free shop. Prices change with exchange rates, promotions and stock; always treat the operator's latest published price as authoritative.
