Channel 1: Chain bakeries (the safest bet)
Shenzhen has a very dense network of chain bakeries — almost every big mall in Luohu, Futian and Nanshan has one. The advantage is plenty of branches and the option to buy individual mooncakes rather than a whole box.
- Maxim's Cakes (美心西餅): The most familiar to Hongkongers, with shops in several Shenzhen malls. The classic double-yolk white lotus seed paste and lava custard are both available; the mainland packaging isn't entirely the same as Hong Kong's.
- Guangzhou Restaurant (廣州酒家): A time-honoured Cantonese mooncake name, famous for double-yolk pure white lotus seed paste and five-kernel mooncakes, with generous, presentable gift boxes.
- Taotao Ju (陶陶居): A century-old Guangzhou teahouse brand with Shenzhen branches; its egg-yolk lotus seed paste and "mini mooncake" range are more popular with younger buyers.
- Ka Nin Na (佳寧娜): An old brand from Shantou, known for Chaoshan-style mooncakes (flaky pastry with mung bean paste).
- Taipan, Saint Honore, East Ocean (大班、聖安娜、東海堂): Mainly snow-skin and modern flavours; mall shops in Shenzhen let you taste before buying.

- Sam's Club (山姆會員店): Member's Mark own-brand mooncake gift boxes offer great value, but you need a membership card (annual fee around ¥260).
- Freshippo (盒馬鮮生): Many stores, and you can order via the app for 30-minute delivery to your hotel; frequent spend-and-save offers.
- Rainbow, China Resources Vanguard, Walmart (天虹、華潤萬家、沃爾瑪): Dense branches, including around Dongmen in Luohu and COCO Park in Futian; the pre-festival discounts are the deepest.

Many five-star hotels in Shenzhen (for example international brands around Futian and Nanshan) put out mooncake gift boxes every year. The packaging is refined and prices run roughly ¥228–¥598, suitable for gifting clients or business use. You usually need to pre-order, and some can arrange delivery.

- Watch for the "mainland version": For the same Hong Kong brand, the mainland version's filling ratio, sweetness and packaging may all differ from the Hong Kong version — don't assume it's the same product.

Luohu route: After clearing the border, take Line 1 one stop to Laojie Station. Bakeries generally open 09:00–22:00, and most supermarkets stay open until 22:30. Futian route: Take Line 4 and change to Shopping Park Station; around COCO Park there's Freshippo and several chain bakeries, generally open 10:00–22:00. Shenzhen Bay route: Take Line 13 and change to Line 2 to Houhai Station; around Coastal City there are large supermarkets and bakeries, and you can grab lunch right after. If you want to compare prices all at once, two or three shops is really enough — the price gap for the same mooncake is usually within ¥20–¥50.
Transport: how to get to the mooncake shops from the three checkpoints
From Luohu Checkpoint (Line 1, Luohu Station), Line 1 runs straight to Dongmen and Guomao; there are plenty of bakeries and supermarkets near Laojie Station. From Futian Checkpoint (Line 4 / Line 10, Futian Checkpoint Station), you can head to the Convention & Exhibition Center and the Shopping Park Station area around COCO Park. It depends on the brand. Mainland brands (Guangzhou Restaurant, Taotao Ju, supermarket own-brands) are clearly cheaper than equivalent Hong Kong products; the mainland versions of Hong Kong brands are generally cheaper than Hong Kong prices too, but the styles and specifications may differ — best to compare on the spot.
