Why Should Hong Kongers Open a Bank Account in Mainland China?
If you're planning to spend, live, or even work in mainland China, opening a mainland bank account will make things much more convenient:
- Link WeChat Pay / Alipay (mainland version)
- Receive salary from mainland companies
- Handle social security and utility payments
- Essential for long-term residence
What Do You Need to Prepare Before Opening an Account?
- Home Return Permit (Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents) — required
- Mainland phone number — banks will send verification codes, so you'll need to get a SIM card first (check out our SIM card guide)
- Some banks may require proof of residence or employment
Account Opening Process
- Choose a bank: Bank of China, ICBC, China Construction Bank, China Merchants Bank, etc. all offer account opening services for Hong Kong residents
- Bring all required documents to a branch (some banks support online appointment booking)
- Fill out forms, complete real-name verification, and take a photo
- Set your password and get your card on the spot (some are approved the same day)
Things to Keep in Mind
- Accounts may have minimum balance requirements or maintenance fees — ask clearly when opening
- Large transfers have limits; you can visit the counter to raise them if needed
- Watch out for handling fees and exchange rates on cross-border remittances
- Keep your account active regularly, otherwise it may be frozen (dormant account)
💡 Some banks have branches near border checkpoints that specifically serve Hong Kong residents, such as near Luohu and Futian checkpoints — opening an account there is especially convenient.
