SIM Card vs. Broadband: Which One Do You Need?
For short trips to the mainland, a SIM card data plan is enough; for long-term stays or remote work, you should consider home broadband. Figure out your needs first, so you don't end up overpaying.
Mainland SIM Card (Mobile Plan)
- Monthly fees range from ¥8 (number retention) to ¥100+ (large data allowance)
- Used for receiving SMS / linking WeChat Pay — a basic plan is sufficient
- Data roaming won't work when you're back in Hong Kong; you'll need to activate roaming separately or use a Hong Kong SIM
Home Broadband
- Major broadband providers in Shenzhen: China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom
- 100M–1000M fiber optic, monthly fee approx. ¥50–200
- If you're renting, ask the landlord / property agent whether broadband is already installed — you can save on installation fees
Where to Apply?
- Telecom operator service centers (bring your Home Return Permit + proof of residence address)
- Some plans can be applied for online, but real-name verification is required
- Broadband installation requires booking a technician visit, usually within 2–3 business days
💡 Long-term Hong Kong residents may consider a "one card, two numbers" Hong Kong plan — no need to switch SIM cards when returning to Hong Kong.
