Here's the number one question every foreigner asks before Shenzhen: do I need cash, and can I use my credit card? The honest answer: mobile payment apps are king, but as a tourist you have practical options at every level.
📱 WeChat Pay & Alipay — set this up before you fly
Both WeChat Pay and Alipay now allow foreign visitors to link an international Visa/Mastercard directly in the app — no Chinese bank account needed. Setup takes about 10 minutes:
- Download WeChat or Alipay, register with your passport, and add your card under Wallet/Payment.
- Small transactions under 200 RMB (roughly) typically don't need extra verification; larger ones may ask you to verify your passport once.
- Once linked, you can scan QR codes at restaurants, supermarkets, taxis, metro gates — basically everywhere in Shenzhen.
This is the single most useful thing you can do before your trip. Practically every shop, stall, metro gate and taxi in Shenzhen accepts QR payments.
💵 Cash — still works, but carry small notes
Cash is legal tender and you can use it in Shenzhen — but many small vendors (street food carts, some markets) may not have change or prefer QR. Carry small denominations (20s and 50s). Big hotels, malls and supermarkets will happily take cash and give change. ATMs at Bank of China and other majors accept international cards and dispense RMB.
💳 Credit cards — accepted at hotels & big malls only
International Visa/Mastercard work at most hotels, upscale malls, and large supermarkets, but many local restaurants, metro stations and small shops do not accept foreign cards at the till. Don't rely on plastic alone — pair it with a mobile pay app or cash.
🏧 Getting RMB in Shenzhen
- ATMs: Bank of China, ICBC and other banks accept international cards at their ATMs. Use one inside a bank branch or mall for safety.
- Exchange desks: at the border checkpoints, Shenzhen airport, and major hotels. Rates vary — check before exchanging large amounts.
- Hong Kong side: many visitors simply exchange HK$ at a money changer in Hong Kong before crossing, or withdraw RMB from a Hong Kong ATM (HSBC, etc.) — often simplest.
💡 Money tips for Shenzhen
- Set up mobile pay at home, not at the border — you'll want it working from minute one.
- Keep a backup: carry ¥200-300 cash plus your physical card, in case your phone dies or a vendor only takes cash.
- Currency: Shenzhen uses the Chinese Yuan (RMB/CNY). Hong Kong dollars are NOT accepted in mainland Shenzhen.
- Watch for dynamic currency conversion at card terminals — always choose to pay in RMB (CNY), not your home currency, to avoid bad rates.
