🚇 MTR to Lo Wu (Luohu) — the classic, cheapest option
Take the MTR East Rail line to the Lo Wu terminus, walk through immigration, and you emerge at Shenzhen's Luohu crossing, connected to Shenzhen Metro Line 1. Simple, frequent and cheap — around HK$45 one way from Kowloon Tong. The crossing is open 06:30–24:00.
Best for: first-timers who want the simplest, most foolproof route. Follow the crowd and you can't get lost.
🚇 MTR to Lok Ma Chau (Futian) — fastest to central Shenzhen
Take the East Rail line to Lok Ma Chau (the stop before Lo Wu when coming from Kowloon), cross the covered bridge, and you arrive at Shenzhen's Futian Checkpoint — the gateway to Futian district, Shenzhen's business and shopping heartland, on Metro Line 4. Opening hours are 06:30–22:30, so it shuts earlier than Lo Wu.
Best for: heading to Futian, COCO Park, or the central business district.
🚄 High-speed rail from West Kowloon — 14 minutes, zero traffic
From Hong Kong West Kowloon Station (next to Austin MTR), high-speed trains reach Futian in 14 minutes or Shenzhen North in 18 minutes. You clear immigration at West Kowloon before boarding — no queue at the border afterwards. Book via the MTR website, 12306.cn or Trip.com.
Best for: comfort, speed, and travelling with luggage. Slightly pricier (about HK$70–80 to Futian) but very smooth.
⛴️ Ferry to Shekou — the quiet route to Nanshan
Most visitors forget the ferries, but they are the easiest way into western Shenzhen. TurboJET and Chu Kong Passenger Transport run between the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan and Shekou Cruise Homeport in around 50 minutes, with sailings from Sheung Wan at 09:00, 11:30, 15:30, 18:00 and 20:45 (returning from Shekou at 07:30, 10:15, 14:15, 16:45 and 19:15). Ordinary class starts at HK$78 one way; first class is HK$210. You clear both lots of immigration at the terminals, so there are no border queues.
There is also a SkyPier service from Hong Kong International Airport straight to Shekou, roughly hourly, for passengers connecting to or from a flight — ordinary class from HK$198, first class HK$330. SkyPier is inside the restricted area, so it is designed for air-to-sea and sea-to-air transit passengers with an onward boarding pass; check with the ferry operator if you are not connecting to a flight.
Best for: Shekou, Sea World and Nanshan; or arriving from Hong Kong Airport without entering Hong Kong.
🚌 Cross-border coaches — door-to-door from HK districts
Cross-border coaches run from many Hong Kong points (Jordan, Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, Tuen Mun, the airport) to Shenzhen checkpoints and malls. Services to Huanggang and Shenzhen Bay cost about HK$50–60. You stay on the coach through the border at Huanggang (a 24-hour crossing) or get off and walk at Shenzhen Bay.

🚗 Shenzhen Bay Bridge and taxis — the private option
From Tuen Mun, drive or take a taxi over the Shenzhen Bay Bridge to the Shenzhen Bay checkpoint (open 06:30–00:00). Do I need a visa to visit Shenzhen from Hong Kong?
Many nationalities do not. Citizens of more than 50 countries can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 240 hours (10 days) when they are in transit to a third country or region — and a Hong Kong → Shenzhen → onward destination routing qualifies. If you are not covered by that scheme, Shenzhen issues a 5-day visa on arrival at Luohu, Huanggang, Shekou and Shenzhen Bao'an Airport: bring a passport valid for at least six months, two blank pages, a return or onward ticket and a hotel booking inside Shenzhen. Nationals of around 25 countries are not eligible for the visa on arrival. Rules change, so check the National Immigration Administration (nia.gov.cn) or the Chinese embassy before you travel.
Is Huanggang Port really open 24 hours?
Yes — Huanggang (Lok Ma Chau) is the only land crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen that operates around the clock. Cross-border coaches serve it from Jordan, Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai and the airport, and you stay on the coach while it clears the border. It is the standard way back to Hong Kong after a late night in Shenzhen.
What time do the checkpoints close?
Lo Wu and Shenzhen Bay close at 24:00, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (Futian) at 22:30, and Heung Yuen Wai (Liantang) at 22:00. Huanggang never closes. Plan the return leg of a day trip around these times.
