Window of the World & Splendid China: Are They Worth It?

Window of the World & Splendid China: Are They Worth It?

Honest review of Shenzhen's two big miniature theme parks: what's inside, how much it costs, who'll love it, and who should skip it.

Every first-time visitor debates whether to visit Window of the World (世界之窗) and Splendid China (锦绣中华). Here's an honest look to help you decide.

🌏 Window of the World — what it is

A 48-hectare park with around 130 scaled-down replicas of world landmarks: the Eiffel Tower (at 108m, a third of the original), the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, Sydney Opera House and more. There are daily shows, a light show at night, and seasonal events.

  • Ticket: around ¥220 adult (check online for discounts).
  • Time needed: 2-4 hours.
  • Who'll love it: families, first-time China visitors, anyone who enjoys slightly kitschy theme parks and great photo backdrops.
  • Who can skip it: travellers short on time or looking for authentic local experiences — it IS a tourist attraction in the truest sense.

🏯 Splendid China & Folk Villages — what it is

Next door, this park pairs miniature China (Great Wall, Terracotta Army, Forbidden City in scale) with the Folk Culture Villages, where performers from ethnic minorities demonstrate dances, crafts and daily life. It's a genuinely useful crash course in China's cultural diversity.

  • Ticket: around ¥220; combination tickets with Window of the World are often available.
  • Time needed: 2-3 hours.
  • Who'll love it: culture-curious visitors, families, photographers.
  • Who can skip it: anyone who's already spent time elsewhere in China seeing the real thing.

🧮 The honest verdict

If you have one afternoon and want the classic Shenzhen experience: yes, pick ONE of the two and go. They're clean, well-run and genuinely impressive in their own theme-park way. Window of the World is the more iconic photo stop; Splendid China has more educational value.

If you'd rather see the real Shenzhen: spend the same hours at Nantou Ancient City + OCT-LOFT (both free) or the coastal Shenzhen Bay Park, and save your money for a great meal. For many travellers, that's the better trade.

📝 If you go

  • Both are at Window of the World metro station (Line 1/2) — 10 minutes from the city centre.
  • Arrive at opening time (09:00) to beat tour groups.
  • Bring water and snacks; park food is pricey.
  • Check showtimes on the day — the evening shows are the highlight for many.
