Shenzhen rewards walkers — and several of its best experiences are completely free. Here's our favourite free-side Shenzhen.
🌊 Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园)
The crown jewel of free Shenzhen: a 13km coastal ribbon with a wide boardwalk, bike lanes and staggering views across the bay to Hong Kong's mountains and the Shenzhen skyline behind you. Best at sunrise and sunset. There are benches everywhere and plenty of cafes near the metro exits.
Getting there: Line 9 to Shenzhen Bay Park station (exit toward the sea), or Line 2 to Hongshuwan / Dengliang. Free entry.
🚢 Sea World / Shekou waterfront (蛇口海上世界)
The old cruise liner Minghua is now the centrepiece of a lively waterfront plaza with fountains, shops and restaurants. Wander in the day, come back at night for the illuminated liner and buzzing bars. Free to enter.
Nearby: the Shekou coastal promenade continues east — a pleasant flat walk past fishing boats and cafes.
🏘️ Nantou Ancient City (南头古城)
Free to walk through this 1,700-year-old walled town. Old gates, temples and lanes now host indie shops, galleries and cafes. Spend an hour or three — entrance is free (some small museums may charge).
🎨 OCT-LOFT Creative Culture Park (华侨城创意文化园)
Free to wander the converted factories now filled with design studios, galleries, and weekend markets. Good coffee, street art and people-watching.

- Fairy Lake Botanical Garden (仙湖植物园) — small entry fee, but the hills, lake and fossil forest are worth it; it's the best greenery in the city.
- Lianhua Hill Park (莲花山公园) — a central hill with a view platform over the CBD; free and popular with families.
- Dafen Oil Painting Village — browse working artists' studios for free; buy only if something speaks to you.
- Shenzhen Museum (in Futian) — free and air-conditioned, a good rainy-day option; bring your passport for entry.
