Shopping in Shenzhen: Malls, Markets, Electronics & Souvenirs

Shenzhen is one of the best shopping cities in Asia — partly because it's the manufacturing capital of the world, so everything is here. Here's how to shop smart as a visitor.

🛍️ The big malls

• COCO Park (福田) — open-air mall with international brands, restaurants and bars. Great evening vibe.
• MixC (萬象城) (Luohu & Nanshan) — upscale malls with luxury brands and great food courts.
• One Avenue (卓悅中心) (Futian) — huge modern mall complex.
• UpperHills (深業上城) — design-led mall in Futian with a photogenic skybridge.
• Coastal City (海岸城) (Nanshan) — big mall near the tech park.

Malls are comfortable, air-conditioned, and card/mobile-pay friendly. Prices are fixed — no bargaining needed.

🎪 Markets — where bargaining lives

• Luohu Commercial City (羅湖商業城) — right by the Luohu border: counterfeit bags, watches, tailored suits, souvenirs. Bargain HARD (start at 30-40% of the asking price) and check quality. It's touristy but fun.
• Dongmen (東門) — clothing, accessories and snack stalls at local prices; more for young fashion than luxury.
• Huaqiangbei (華強北) — the electronics capital: components, gadgets, phone accessories. Beware of fake "deals" — buy simple accessories here, not high-value electronics.

📱 Electronics — buy smart

Huaqiangbei is legendary but full of traps for tourists: counterfeit batteries, refurbished phones sold as new, and "unlocked" deals that aren't. For safe electronics shopping, buy at official brand stores in malls (Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi stores are everywhere) with proper receipts. At Huaqiangbei, stick to accessories and cables.

• Tea — good Chinese tea from tea shops (ask for a tasting).
• Silk scarves & fans — elegant, light souvenirs.
• Jade & jewellery — only from reputable stores with certificates.
• Chinese medicine/herbal tea sets — interesting gifts (check customs rules for your country).
• Popmart & designer toys — Shenzhen has the stores behind the global designer-toy craze; great gifts.
• Tailored clothing — Luohu's tailors can make a suit in days if you have time.

💡 Shopping tips

• Bargain at markets, not malls. At markets start at ~30-40% of asking and walk away if they don't meet you halfway.
• Check for tax refund — mainland China offers tourist tax refunds (離境退稅) on purchases over a threshold at participating stores. Ask for the refund form and keep receipts; reclaim at departure.
• Receipts matter for electronics warranty and tax refunds.
• Shipping: if you buy big items, shops can often ship domestically, but international shipping needs arranging yourself — factor that in.
