Shenzhen sits just north of Hong Kong with a subtropical climate: hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. Packing is straightforward if you know the season — plus there are a few China-specific essentials (adapter, VPN) that first-timers often forget.
🌤️ Weather by season
Summer (June–September) — hot & humid
Expect 28-34°C with high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Pack light breathable clothing, an umbrella (also useful for sun), sunscreen and insect repellent. Air-conditioning indoors is fierce — bring a light layer for malls and metro.
Autumn (October–November) — the best time
Pleasant 22-28°C, lower humidity, clear skies. Light layers during the day, a thin jacket for evenings. This is peak travel season — book hotels early.
Winter (December–February) — mild but can dip
10-20°C, generally dry. Pack a medium jacket or coat; cold snaps can push temperatures toward 5°C at night. No snow in the city, but indoor heating is limited — dress warmly if you feel the cold.
Spring (March–May) — warming up
18-28°C, occasional rain and higher humidity into May. Layers are your friend; an umbrella is wise.
🔌 The adapter most people forget
Mainland China uses Type A/I sockets (220V, same as Hong Kong) — flat two-pin plugs, but not the British three-pin type used in HK. If you're coming from HK/UK/Europe/US you'll need a universal travel adapter. Most hotels have USB ports, but bring your own adapter for the desk.

- VPN installed and tested BEFORE arrival — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram etc. are blocked without one.

- Power bank — you'll use your phone a lot for payments and maps.

- Comfortable walking shoes — Shenzhen is a walking city with huge malls and parks.
- Passport — required for hotel check-in and SIM purchase; keep it on you.
- Hotel booking confirmation printed or on phone — needed for the arrival form and check-in.
- Small RMB notes (¥20/50) as cash backup.
- Day pack for shopping (Shenzhen is a shopper's paradise).
- Light rain jacket or umbrella most of the year.
- Sunscreen & hat in warmer months.
🎒 What you can buy there instead
Honestly, Shenzhen is one of the best cities in the world for buying things cheaply — if you forget an adapter, umbrella or even a suitcase, you'll find them at any mall (including the enormous Luohu Commercial City near the border). Pack light and shop smart.
