Whether you can simply walk across the border into Shenzhen depends entirely on your passport. Good news: China has relaxed its rules dramatically since 2024. If you hold a passport from most of Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea or Brazil, you do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days. US citizens are not in that group, but can still use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit rule in many cases. Let's break it down.

China's unilateral visa-free policy (no invitation, no onward ticket required) covers a growing list of nationalities. As of late 2026, the 30-day visa-free group includes most of Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, Russia and the Gulf states. The full list changes a few times a year — always confirm with the latest official announcements before you fly.
Key point for this group: you can enter Shenzhen (or anywhere in China) directly, stay up to 30 days, and fly home or continue anywhere — no need to prove an onward ticket to a third country.
🛫 US, Mexican & a few other passports: the 240-hour transit rule
If your passport is not on the visa-free list — most notably the United States, plus Mexico, Indonesia and a few others — you can still enter Shenzhen for up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa, if you are genuinely transiting.
The rule works like this:
- You must hold a valid passport and a confirmed onward ticket (with fixed date and seat) leaving mainland China for a third country or region within 240 hours.
- Example route: USA → Hong Kong → Shenzhen (5 days) → Thailand. Hong Kong counts as a separate region, so a ticket out of Shenzhen to Bangkok, Seoul, Taipei or anywhere outside mainland China satisfies the rule.
- You enter and exit through one of the 65 approved ports — including Shenzhen's land border crossings from Hong Kong and, since November 2025, the West Kowloon high-speed rail station and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge.
- The 240-hour clock starts at immigration. You can travel freely across 24 mainland provinces during that window, then must leave on time.
📍 Entering Shenzhen from Hong Kong
Most visitors arrive via Hong Kong. The main land crossings into Shenzhen are:
- Lo Wu (羅湖 / Luohu) — the busiest rail crossing; East Rail line from Hung Hom/Kowloon Tong to Lo Wu, then walk across and connect to Shenzhen Metro Luohu station.
- Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (落馬洲 / Futian) — East Rail line to Lok Ma Chau, walk across to Shenzhen Metro Futian Checkpoint station.
- Shenzhen Bay Bridge (深圳灣) — by bus/car from Tuen Mun; opens early and closes late, good for the western New Territories.
- High-speed rail — from West Kowloon station directly to Futian (14 minutes) or Shenzhen North; immigration is done at West Kowloon before boarding.
All these crossings accept both 30-day visa-free and 240-hour transit travellers. Bring your passport, and for transit passengers, a printed copy of your onward booking helps.

If your nationality qualifies for neither scheme, apply for a tourist (L) visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate before you travel, or use the visa-on-arrival service at Shenzhen airport for certain same-day port visas.
